Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Socialist elected to New York’s 14th Congressional District last month, criticized the Trump administration on Monday for its immigration policies, tweeting that this “Admin has been criminal from the start.”

The tweet from Ocasio-Cortez was in response to an earlier one from Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., who wrote Saturday night that she was able to “successfully assist 5 asylum seekers - 2 unaccompanied minors, a mother and her 9 year old child, and a young man with a serious medical condition - into the United States.”

Ocasio-Cortez thanked Jayapal for getting involved but argued that “it shouldn’t have to take a member of Congress physically showing up herself to get ICE to stop violating international law *as an exception.*

Ocasio-Cortez has been a notable critic of both President Trump and the administration’s broader policies.

Part of her campaign platform included advocating for the abolishment of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

“Alex believes that if we are to uphold civic justice, we must abolish ICE and see to it that our undocumented neighbors are treated with the dignity and respect owed to all people, regardless of citizenship status,” her platform reads on her website.

She also recently sparked a backlash after comparing members of the migrant caravan to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany.
