Democrats' shift right frustrates Hispanic activists

By JEANNE CUMMINGS | 5/6/10 5:00 PM EDT

Some advocates believe the Democrats' tough-love approach to immigration is becoming a liability in the long fight to pass comprehensive reform. AP

To get an idea of how far Democrats have moved to the right on the issue of immigration reform, consider this: The Obama administration’s enforcement efforts in 2009 led to the deportation of 387,790 illegal immigrants — a 5 percent jump over the Bush administration’s record in 2008.

And this: A liberal Democratic senator from New York is a co-sponsor of a measure that includes what civil libertarians fear could become the first national ID card.

And this: A PowerPoint presentation offering guidance for Democrats in the coming Senate debate concludes that the most persuasive argument to voters for supporting reform is actually a classic Republican pitch: because it will force illegal immigrants to “pay their fair share of taxes.â€

Worse still, immigrant advocates charge, in their zeal to demonstrate toughness, DHS and its enforcement partners have dragged many law-abiding illegal immigrants and legitimate businesses into the system, shattering Obama’s promises of more humane treatment.

This article is misleading. First, Obama and Napolitano have stopped the most effective enforcement, have stopped the fence, and have cut the number of border agents.

Second, although Schumer's and the Democrats' rhetoric may have "shifted right" somewhat, the framework that Schumer has released is the same old amnesty: legalization now with promises of enforcement. If Schumer et al. was really serious about enforcing the laws and securing the border, he would do these things alone -- and not combine them with amnesty.

    right wing?

Since when is it a right-wing idea to get rid of scab workers? Its actually very left-wing to restrict the labor supply in order to make things better for workers.
