Accuses federal agents of being used by 'white nationalists'

A Democratic congressman returned Monday from a border visit to say he’s writing a bill that would abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying it’s become a tool for “white nationalists.”

Rep. Mark Pocan, Wisconsin Democrat, said ICE is “heartless” and said the U.S. needs a more compassionate immigration system.

ICE is the Homeland Security agency that targets child sex predators and investigates gang violence as well as acting as the country’s main deportation force.

It has been the target of vicious verbal attacks and its office in Portland, Oregon, was blockaded and shut down for several days last week. Local police declined to step in and protect the facility from the protesters, according to the Portland Mercury.

Mr. Pocan said ICE has become a symbol of President Trump’s immigration policy, and must be ended.

“During my trip to the southern border, it was clear that ICE, and its actions of hunting down and tearing apart families, has wreaked havoc on far too many people,” he said. “From conducting raids at garden centers and meatpacking plants, to breaking up families at churches and schools, ICE is tearing apart families and ripping at the moral fabric of our nation.”

He did not say how he would divide out ICE’s duties, which in addition to deportations, anti-gang activities and catching sex predators also includes sniffing out counterfeit merchandise and returning artifacts stolen from historical sites and collections across the globe.
