Dems reach out to Lou Dobbs to build backing for immigration reform
By Alexander Bolton - 01/28/10 01:28 PM ET
Senate Democrats have reached out to former CNN anchor and prominent illegal-immigration opponent Lou Dobbs in an effort to build broad bipartisan support for immigration reform.

Winning the support of Dobbs, who became a prominent critic of illegal immigration and proposals to grant amnesty to illegal workers, could provide a significant boost to reform efforts.

And even though the victory of Sen.-elect Scott Brown (R) in Massachusetts appears to have diminished the chances of passing far-reaching, controversial immigration reform, Democrats are not giving up.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who is spearheading the Democrats’ effort to put together a comprehensive reform bill, met with Dobbs on Wednesday.

“We’re meeting with all different kinds of groups, trying to get everybody together to come out for one bill,â€

Well, there is a deadline, Harry Reid. It is called the 2010 elections.
And what does Lou Dobbs have to do with anything, since he has clearly shown himself as wishy-washy on CIR?

Now that is funny. Two losing sides, trying to work together against the American people.

Does anyone still listen to Dobbs' show? I'm wondering if he discussed his meeting with Schumer.

Lou has a screw loose. To think I once admired the man makes my head hurt.

Odd couple: Schumer, Dobbs talk immigration
    By: Meredith Shiner
    January 28, 2010 03:02 PM EST

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) met Wednesday with an unlikely voice in the debate over immigration legislation: Lou Dobbs.

Schumer, chairman of the Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on immigration, cited his huddle with Dobbs — who sparked controversy as a CNN host with anti-immigration segments titled "Exporting America," "Broken Borders" and "War on the Middle Class" — as an example of how Democrats are committed to moving forward on immigration reform in a bipartisan way.

"Yes, we are making good progress," Schumer said Thursday. "The progress that we were [making] in the fall is continuing now. We're meeting with all different kinds of groups, trying to get everybody together to come out for one bill. In fact, yesterday, I met with Lou Dobbs, who, as many of you know, is changing his views on immigration."

The senior senator from New York faced a question over whether immigration is still a legislative priority, as President Barack Obama's State of the Union address failed to mention any initiatives on immigration reform.

Insisting that reform still will be passed, Schumer focused on finding a bipartisan way to push a bill through the Senate.

"Now I've said all along, even before last Tuesday with the Massachusetts election, we need a bipartisan bill — two Democrats and two Republicans to produce it. We're not there yet. We're still working on getting our Republicans, but we're talking to people who have a lot of interest and enthusiasm, and our intention is to move forward," Schumer said.

"our intention is to move forward," has to be the most over used phrase of the Dems agenda. Can anybody guess how many times Reid used that phrase?
