Dennis Ross Wants Congress to Finish Fence on Mexican Border

    Dennis Ross

    By KEVIN DERBY
    January 18, 2016 - 10:45am

U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla., part of the congressional leadership as House senior deputy majority whip, wants the federal government to finish the 700 mile fence on the Mexican border by the end of the year.

On Friday, Ross showcased his “Finish the Fence Act” which would have the U.S. Homeland Security secretary finish the fence by December 31.

“Since I was first elected, securing our border has been a top priority,” Ross said. “This week, I introduced H.R. 4391 because finishing the construction of the fence along our southwest border is the first incremental step in securing our border, providing for our national security, and halting the massive influx of immigrants entering our country illegally."

Ross insisted his bill would have an impact on Florida even though the fence is located across the country.

“Alarmingly, Florida is one of only six states that account for 60 percent of illegal immigrants in the U.S.,” Ross noted before turning back to the fence. “In 2006, Congress mandated a 700-mile fence be built along our southwest border. Ten years later, and with no end date in sight, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has yet to finish the fence, and our border remains detrimentally unsecured. There is now no excuse for the delay because our Republican-led Congress recently provided DHS with $11 billion to finish construction and better secure our borders.”

Ross jabbed President Barack Obama‘s executive actions on immigration and insisted finishing the fence would help national security.

“Although the president has checked-out and continues to act well beyond his authority, particularly when it comes to violating our immigration laws and protecting our nation, I refuse to put American lives at risk and let our legal system be ignored and trampled upon,” Ross said. “This is not only an issue of illegal immigrants crossing our porous border; it is also an issue of national security. ISIS is looking for every possible opportunity and weakness within our security systems to infiltrate and radicalize individuals in joining its jihadist regimes to kill Americans, including recruiting and training those illegally crossing our border and entering our country.”

Ross has yet to find any co-sponsors for his bill which is now before the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee.

The border fence was signed into law around 2006. Why did it take until 2016 for one Congress Critter to "suggest" that the fence be installed ? How long can they play us for idiots ? Is there an election coming ? These Congressional PARASITES must be replaced with American Patriots. Vote the RINO's out.

I don't want Congress to push the Obama Administration to complete the fence this year. We need to wait until hopefully Donald Trump is in the White House, because he'll know how to build a wall that will good and right, and hopefully get Mexico to pay for it, and rightfully so. It's their people for the most part we have to keep out. If they were behaving properly in Mexico, we wouldn't need it.

Thank you John Doe - I wasn't aware of the court challenges you linked. In our current state I totally agree with Judy's position of waiting for Trump to build a real wall. Take Care, John

For their safety many Border Patrol Agents don't want a solid wall because they can't see who is on the other side and what they are doing. They would prefer a fence that they can see through.

When the design is laid-out, visibility will be addressed through a number of means such as cameras and look outs posts. You have to remember that in terms of their safety, a fence you can see through is a fence the enemy can shoot through, so I'm not sure safety for agents is a legitimate argument against a wall in favor of a fence. It would be nice if the Mexicans and others south of the border would have enough respect for our country and people to stop crossing our border illegally. I'm sure the wall will be a very nice smart wall that will work for the mission as well as keep agents safe.

I saw an interview of a Border Patrol Union Rep on local TV news who said they were polling agents who work in the field (people who work in an office are not included) and MOST agent prefer to see what is going on near them when they are in a vehicle, on an ATV, riding a horse or on foot near the border. And thus prefer a fence over a wall. To them it's a safety issue.

Exactly what is a real wall? The term "wall" has been used repeatedly in the past by various politicians to describe a barrier along the border, but most of the time the so-called wall is never actually a wall, not a true wall in the sense of what we consider a wall. To date I haven't heard Trump describe how his so-called wall will be built or the construction material to be used. In actuality he may very well just be talking about a fence, not a brick and mortar wall. If I'm wrong, I will await someone's posting of a statement from Trump giving us a full description of his so-called wall.

Actually there have been attempts, through Amendments, at getting the funding necessary to build the double-layered fencing described in the Secure Fence Act of 2006. All have been rejected. I know for a fact Sen. Session has tried repeatedly to get the fence funded.
