Pope Francis Prays for Migrants at the Border between Mexico and the USA

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico - Pope Francis paused before holding a mass with migrants and victims of violence to pray in front of the Rio Grande river which divides Mexico from the U.S., at the foot of a white cross erected at the site.

The popemobile entered the fairgrounds in Ciudad Juarez Wednesday where hundreds of attendees were asked to observe a moment of silence to accompany the pope's prayers at a cross near the border.

The pontiff walked on a ramp leading up to the cross and laid a floral tribute at the foot of the cross, and from there he blessed hundreds of people who gathered on the other side of the river in the USA.

He also blessed three crosses which will go to the Dioceses of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and Las Cruces and El Paso in the U.S..

After some moments of prayer for immigrants who risk their lives crossing the border daily, Pope Francis returned to his popemobile to complete the journey to the altar where the Mass was officiated.

"The migrants bring energy, work ethic and a spirit of adventure which have shaped the U.S. into a great nation. The Pope's visit is a great sign here and a sign of hope for separated families and those that suffer," said Cardinal Sean O'Malley, archbishop of Boston who accompanies the pope.

The visit to Ciudad Juarez comes on the last day of the Pope's five day trip to Mexico.
