Three illegal immigrants were arrested last week after running away from a vehicle crash scene.

The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office says the North Dakota Highway Patrol responded to the crash at the intersection of North Dakota Highway 68 and North Dakota Highway 16 . The crash involved a commercial motor vehicle and a four door sedan that didn’t stop at a stop sign and hit the tanker truck.

Three Hispanic males immediately fled on foot from the crash. A K9 team tracked the subjects for about three miles through rugged badlands terrain and grassland. Two of the males were finally captured. One by a North Dakota state trooper at a ranch, and the second by a McKenzie County deputy and the K9 team. The third continued fleeing from the area resulting in a lengthy search into the night before the trail was lost and the search was suspended. Several ranchers in the immediate vicinity were alerted and also requested law enforcement to search their homes and outbuildings.

During the search, a jug of laundry detergent was found that was tossed during the flight from the crash. Police found around 30 grams of methamphetamine. The estimated street value in western North Dakota for 30 grams is approximately $6,000.

On Christmas Eve, the U.S. Border Patrol notified the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office that the third suspect was captured near Williston after reports of drug sales being made there.

One suspect has since been processed for deportation and the other two remain in custody with pending local and federal charges in relation to the incident. One suspect has been deported 33 times and will be charged with felony immigration violations.
