BARNSTABLE - A 30-year-old Brazilian native who was deported from the U.S. in 2007 pleaded not guilty in Barnstable District Court on Friday to sexually assaulting two 13-year-old girls in Hyannis last month.

Renato Campos, who is also known to law enforcement as Renato Cordeiro-DeCampos, was charged with three counts of selling or delivering liquor to a minor, two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and one count of aggravated rape of a child with force.

On Jan. 14, the two girls were at the Cape Cod Mall trying to "plan their evening" before going to the home of one of their boyfriend's, Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Michael Giardino said in court.

A man who investigators later identified as Campos, arrived at the residence and took them in his car to a different home, where he provided them with alcohol, Giardino said.

The man forced the two girls to perform oral sex on him and then penetrated one of them with his fingers, according to Giardino.

Campos was kept out of public sight at his arraignment because of an issue with his identification, his attorney, Robert Hofmann said.

Hofmann agreed to have Campos held without bail until a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Feb. 8. At the hearing, a judge will determine whether Campos poses a threat to the public or himself and if he will be held without bail while awaiting trial.

"On Feb. 2, 2017, (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officers placed an immigration detainer on Renato Cordeiro-DeCampos, a citizen of Brazil, following his arrest on local charges in Hyannis, Massachusetts," Shawn Neudauer, spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, wrote in an email to the Times. "Cordeiro-DeCampos was previously removed from the United States in June of 2007."

The detainer requires that Campos be transferred to ICE custody if he is released by local authorities.

Since his official removal from the U.S., Campos has faced a handful of illegal driving charges in Barnstable District Court from 2011 to 2013, as well as an assault and battery case stemming from a 2012 fight on Main Street in Hyannis, according to court records.

Campos was found guilty of two of the driving violations, but the other cases, including the assault, resulted in dismissals or not responsible findings.

Hofmann and a spokeswoman for the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office declined to comment on Campos' immigration status.
