Deported to Mexico 7 times, man sentenced to prison for illegally reentering U.S.

A 34-year-old Mexican man was sentenced to 30 months in a federal prison for illegally reentering the U.S. after deportation.

U.S. District Judge John L. Badalamenti in Fort Myers sentenced Jose Alfredo Carbajal-Espinosa on Monday after the man had pleaded guilty in May, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release.

Carbajal-Espinosa was previously deported from the U.S. to Mexico on seven occasions. On April 8, 2013, he was convicted of illegal reentry after deportation, a federal felony offense, the news release said.

Following his conviction, Carbajal-Espinosa illegally reentered the U.S., the release stated.

Carbajal-Espinosa in October was arrested in Collier County, charged with fleeing/eluding a marked law enforcement unit with emergency equipment activated, possessing an amphetamine and driving with a suspended license.

The federal case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE-ERO). It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Trent Reichling.
