Deported MS-13 member sneaks back, gets stabbed

Feb. 17, 2012

Maybe Felix Arevalo-Cantarero should have stayed home.

The MS-13 gang member was sentenced to more than four years in prison for illegally re-entering the United States after he was found stabbed in a Frederick park.

You might remember the 26-year-old Arevalo-Cantarero. He was one of three gang members arrested two years ago in a shocking hate crime beating of gay men and women in Wheaton.

In that case, in October 2009, Arevalo-Cantarero and his compatriots got out of their vehicle and called the victims "faggots" and "lesbians."

The gang members identified themselves as MS-13 and pulled out a knife and a tire iron, police said.

One of the victims was struck on the forehead with a rock, fracturing her skull and causing severe internal bleeding, police said.

She still suffers from significant pain, memory loss, and loss of motor function, prosecutors said.

Arevalo-Cantarero was charged with a hate crime and attempted murder. He was convicted of first-degree assault.

Arevalo-Cantarero was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with all but six months suspended.

He was released from prison in November 2010 and deported to El Salvador and ordered not to re-enter the United States without official permission, prosecutors said.

Within months the MS-13 member was back in the country, living in Silver Spring, authorities said.

On July 31, 2011, police responded to another crime involving Arevalo-Cantarero, but this time he was the victim.

Frederick police officers found Arevalo-Cantarero in a playground, suffering from numerous cut and stab wounds to the head and neck.

Further investigation revealed that Arevalo-Cantarero was a member of the Fulton Clique of MS-13 that operates in the Frederick area.

He had been attending a party, along with other MS-13 members when the stabbing occurred.

Investigators found that the stabbing was related to MS-13 activity.
