Border agents apprehend three smugglers

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents seized approximately 229 pounds of marijuana and arrested three illegal crossers who were attempting to smuggle the drugs into the country. The marijuana had an estimated street value of $114,000.

According to Agent Robert Lowry of the Yuma Sector Communications Division, agents assigned to the Wellton Station were tracking the footprints of suspected illegal crossers on Thursday near Mile Marker 113 north of Interstate 8 and west of Gila Bend.

Agents eventually caught up with the three crossers, who all admitted to being in the country illegally. A search of the surrounding area yielded five makeshift backpacks containing marijuana.

Lowry explained that there were no other drug smugglers in the group, adding that some of the makeshift backpacks were smaller in size, allowing the smuggler to carry more than one at a time.
