Trump says no protection for Dreamers without wall

    January 01, 2018 | 08:08

This Friday Trump has once again put on edge the future of almost 800,000 Dreamers, as he announces on Twitter that there will be no more DACA if Congress does not agree to substantial funding of the wall between the U.S and Mexico.

The president's maneuver was meant to set up smooth negotiations when lawmakers reconvene in Washington, D.C., after the New Year - giving Democrats the message that if they want any chance of pushing their Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program forward, he must receive the funding he needs for the border wall, which expected in the budget that must pass January 19.

Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said December 20 the Senate would vote on whether protect Dreamers, which is the term used to describe the young people protected under DACA.

"The Democrats have been told, and fully understand, that there can be no DACA without the desperately needed WALL at the Southern Border and an END to the disgusting Chain Migration & ridiculous Lottery System of Immigration etc.", Trump tweeted. "We must protect our Country at all cost!". At the time, the President said he wanted Congress to step in to save the program.

"Current protections for DACA recipients end in March - unless Congress comes up with a fix", Townhall reported. To protect DREAMers from deportation, Democrats may now have to backtrack from some of its earlier stances.

Democrats and Republicans were not able to meet to discuss the program before the end of 2018.

Sen. The program gave 800,000 immigrants-colloquially known as "Dreamers"-the chance to apply for two-year school and work permits that allowed them to live in the country without fear of deportation".

The Trump administration announced September 5 it was ending the program and giving Congress six months to negotiate a legislative alternative to save it.

Activists gather outside the offices of Republican Congresswoman Mimi Walters (R-Irvine) in support of the DREAM Act in Irvine, California, U.S., November 1, 2017.

Trump has alleged that the "worst" people from each country are selected and sent to the US under this program.

"We're working on a plan - subject to getting massive border controls", Trump stipulated in September, according to Townhall.

Commenting on DACA, he said, "I wouldn't do a DACA plan without a wall".

Any agreement would be the second major deal between Trump and Schumer and Pelosi - who Trump has taken to referring to as "Chuck and Nancy".

This deal was quickly rejected. Trump said earlier this year that his administration was not looking at "citizenship" or "amnesty" but that they are "looking at allowing people to stay here".

"We see the drugs pouring into the country, we need the wall". "We want to get massive border security".

Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader and Nancy Pelosi, House minority leader, are both opposed to the wall.

Congressional leaders of both parties are scheduled to meet with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on January 3 to discuss the spending bill, immigration and other matters.

"We will not leave here without a DACA fix", Pelosi said. Then later in September a second deal was presented by Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, and almost signed, that exchanged beefing up border security in exchange for Amnesty for the Dreamers, but later fell through, as Trump stated he wanted more than just beefing up the border.

"During the GOP primary, he pledged to deport every single undocumented immigrant from the USA - a position he drifted away from during the general election".

DACA was established by the Obama administration in June of 2012. Chants of "Build The Wall" became a trademark of his campaign and, as president, Trump has advocated ending so-called chain migration, guidelines that allow people in the United States to bring in family members from overseas, and the visa lottery system, a program that distributes around 50,000 visas to countries where there is a low rate of immigration to the US. 50,000 people are allowed in each year.
