    House Passes Illegal Immigration Bill

    February 29, 2008

    NewsChannel 19's Ellis Eskew Reports:

    The Alabama legislator is cracking down on illegal immigrants working for the state.

    Thursday, the House passed a bill 92-0 to fine contractors that knowing hire illegals for state projects.

    Contractors who do choose to hire them could face a fine up to three percent of the contract value.

    It could put contractors out thousands of dollars.

    State Representative Ronald Grantland of Hartselle introduced the bill.

    "The bill requires contractors that do business with the state of Alabama to certify in writing they will not hire illegals, unauthorized aliens," said Grantland.

    Now the bill will go to the Senate for a vote.

    It certainly isn't enough to stop a crew chief using illegal aliens, who stands to underbid the American competition by 20 or 30%.

    Three percent fines are just an insignificant "cost of doing business."
