SOUTH PADRE ISLAND - Eight Mexican fishermen are facing deportation for illegally fishing in U.S. waters.

Federal authorities got a tip Thursday night about the men fishing in the gulf. They were about 35 miles away from the South Padre Island jetties. When they arrived, one boat with four people tried to get away but were caught after a short pursuit.

Authorities also discovered red snapper and sharks on their boats. The men actually confessed to illegally fishing.

The boats were seized by the U.S. Coast Guard. The eight men were turned over to the Border Patrol for deportation.

Shouldn't they be prosecuted for the fishing violation prior to deportation, or is this another case of ignore the crime and just deport?

They lost their boats, fishing gear and fish. I think that is their punishment.

They lost that stuff automatically because it was used in an illegal act. In my book that does not equate to prosecution. Being prosecuted means to put an accused on trial.
