Now, U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) is looking at a new location for a detention center just south of downtown Ionia, which would create 264 new jobs and would house up to 600 male detainees.
The Immigration Centers of America previously proposed installing a detention center at the old Deerfield Correctional Facility at 1755 Harwood Road in Ionia to house immigrant men age 18 and older. The facility would have been on the 46.3-acre Deerfield site, which has sat vacant since 2009.
However, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer blocked the sale of the Michigan Land Bank-owned property, saying that building more detention facilities won’t solve the nation’s immigration crisis.
Now an environmental assessment is being prepared for ICE for a proposed contractor-owned/operated detention facility to be constructed in the city of Ionia.
