(Special to the Times)
Juárez Mayor Héctor Murguía said Thursday that Juárez police officers must be aware of the current climate in Juárez, and therefore, should avoid gathering in groups for their own safety.
"We must stress that we are living in difficult times (in Juárez)," Murguía said in a statement. "So, police officers need to accept that and they have to take care of themselves."
On Wednesday night, five Juárez police officers were killed and two were seriously wounded after several gunmen stormed into a party and shot the officers, authorities said.
None was carrying a weapon because they were off duty, officials said.
Juárez police officers are told not to gather in groups or crowds to avoid being targets of organized crime, Murguía said.
"Also, we tell them not to let their guards down and to protect themselves," Murguía added. "Criminals are ruthless and hearthless."
