Any Syrian living in the U.S. right now – NO MATTER WHAT THEIR LEGAL STATUS – has just been granted a new “temporary amnesty” on Monday by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.
Johnson has issued “temporary protected status” to Syrians who are in the U.S. as of Monday and “continue to reside here permanently,” saying they can apply for work permits and “other documents” to remain and live in the U.S. without fear of being deported, for up to 18 months longer, “no matter what their legal status.”
The order applies to an estimated 8,000 Syrians, including those who are in the U.S. illegally and those who have overstayed their visa over the past four years, reports the Washington Times.
“Syria’s lengthy civil conflict has resulted in high levels of food insecurity, limited access to water and medical care, and massive destruction of Syria’s infrastructure. Attacks against civilians, the use of chemical weapons and irregular warfare tactics, as well as forced conscription and use of child soldiers have intensified the humanitarian crisis,” Mr. Johnson said in announcing the new program.
Meanwhile, Obama’s plan to import more refugees into the United States is moving forward.
“We are committed to the president’s plan to resettle 85,000 of the world’s most vulnerable refugees from around the world, including 10,000 refugees from Syria, to the United States in fiscal year 2016,” which ends in September, Julia Mason, a U.S. Department of State spokesperson, said.
“We believe that we will meet these goals. We expect that the rate of refugee arrivals — both of Syrian refugees and of refugees from around the world — will increase through the end of this fiscal year.”
