DHS INKS DEAL WITH GUATEMALA TO COMBAT IMMIGRATION CRISIS

U.S. and Guatemalan officials signed an agreement Tuesday that aims to stem the flow of illegal migrants leaving the Central American country en masse.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on Tuesday alongside his counterparts in the Guatemalan government. The MOC calls on Guatemala to better enforce its borders, reducing the number U.S.-bound immigrants who leave the country illegally.

In return, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has agreed to more cooperation with Guatemala regarding drug and human trafficking issues.

“I am proud to sign this agreement with Minister Enrique Antonio Degenhart,” McAleenan stated Tuesday.

“Through our continued collaboration and partnership, the U.S. and Guatemala are formalizing a number of initiatives to improve the lives and security of our respective citizens by combating human trafficking and the smuggling of illegal goods, helping to limit ‘push’ factors that encourage dangerous irregular migration to the U.S., perpetuating the ongoing crisis at our border.”

The agreement will target the operation of transnational criminal organizations. Much of their involvement in human and drug smuggling contributes to illegal immigration.

The MOC signing kicked off McAleenan’s four-day trip in the Northern Triangle, where he will meet with leaders in the region to find solutions to the immigration crisis. The acting secretary is expected to finish his trip by Thursday.

The Northern Triangle nations of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, have been the epicenter of the U.S. border emergency.

McAleenan revealed earlier in May that over 1% of the population of Honduras and Guatemala has left for the U.S. since September 2018. Many of the people remaining in these impoverished countries still wish to leave.

A survey in Guatemala found nearly 40% of respondents wanted to emigrate, with a vast majority of those choosing the U.S. as their destination.

Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants reach the U.S.-Mexico border every month. April marked the second consecutive month where migrant encounters with Border Patrol topped 100,000.

Migrant apprehensions have continually risen since January.

A large bulk of the migrants are family units and unaccompanied minors from the Northern Triangle, wreaking havoc on a U.S. system designed to handle only adult Mexican nationals.

DHS leaders have begged Congress for more money to fund border operations, and for changes to immigration laws that would better reflect the demographics of the current immigrants.

“Family units have reached a record level: 59% so far this month of our total crossings on the border,” McAleenan told lawmakers earlier in May about the crisis. “That is a direct response to the vulnerability in our legal framework.”

Maybe some good will come from it. I sure hope so.

So now we have the tool of Travel Ban for certain countries, Remain in Mexico for asylum seekers over southern border, and now an inked deal with Guatemala on their border which is the source of all immigration south of Mexico. I like this a lot.

How much EXTORTION money is this costing us?

Send in NATO troops to round up their gangs and put them in prison on their soil.

Those countries are small...troops can do a SWEEP and get it done very quickly! We pay those troops, they need to work for USA too!

You would. Let me ask you this, exactly how many are remaining in Mexico? I keep hearing about the thousands bused here and flown there, but I'm hearing very little about the few being forced to remain in Mexico. Why isn't everyone being forced to wait in Mexico?

Additionally, the details were very scant on the Guatemala deal. As far as we know there could be some protections for illegals written into the deal ... we just don't know. The facts and details are scant, to say the least.

In view of the hoards of illegals pouring across our border unchallenged and released with work permits into our interior, I think you trust our government too much.

Just MORE BS GARBAGE from Trump and Co. How many of these bogus deals have they signed with Guatemala anyway now? This isn't the 1st. Why are they even bothering with this garbage? They're getting away with what they're doing. Most people to this day have NO CLUE what's going taking place on the border and wouldn't be interested in hearing about it anyway. Secretary Nielsen Signs Historic Regional Compact with Central America to Stem Irregular Migration at the Source, Confront U.S. Border Crisis

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen M. Nielsen traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras where she met with security ministers representing the countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. The multilateral discussions mark the continuation of a multi-year diplomatic process and the signing of a historic Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on border security cooperation in Central America.

Together with Guatemalan Minister of Government Enrique Degenhart, Honduran Security Minister Julian Pacheco, and Salvadoran Minister of Justice and Public Security Mauricio Landaverde, Secretary Nielsen expressed her gratitude for the continued collaboration and partnership of the Central American nations as they work to stemthe flood of irregular migration and develop regional approach to addressing the ongoing humanitarian and security emergency at our Southern Border.

“America shares common cause with the countries of Central America in confronting these challenges,” said Secretary Nielsen. “We all want to enforce our laws, ensure a safe and orderly migrant flow, protect our communities, facilitate legal trade and travel, support vulnerable populations, interdict dangerous and illicit drug flow, and secure our borders.”

“I look forward to implementing this historic agreement and working with my Northern Triangle counterparts to help secure all of our nations and to end the humanitarian and security crisis we face,” said Nielsen. “Together we will prevail.”

The MOC – the first ever multilateral compact on border security – aims to better synchronize cooperation between the countries in order to bolster border security, prevent the formation of new migrant caravans, and address the root causes of the migration crisis through better synchronized efforts to include the following:

• Human trafficking and smuggling;
• Combating transnational criminal organizations and gangs;
• Expanding Information and Intelligence Sharing;
• Strengthening air, land, and maritime border security.

Each of these focus areas will be pursued through an array of agreed-upon initiatives. Technical working groups with representatives from each country will monitor the initiatives and ensure they are carried out expeditiously. The groups will meet periodically throughout the year, with Secretary Nielsen and the Northern Triangle Ministers continuing to meet in the coming months to ensure continued momentum.

While in Honduras, Secretary Nielsen also participated in a bilateral meeting with the Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández and First Lady Ana Rosalinda García de Hernández. Secretary Nielsen affirmed America’s commitment to working with Honduras in a shared effort of combatting human trafficking and child smuggling, as well as addressing the major drivers of irregular migration prompting families and individuals to put themselves in harm’s way by embarking on the dangerous journey north.

So what are you saying, that you don't want our government to stop the flow of illegal aliens from Central America at the source on the Guatemala Border??!!

Wow.

The Remain in Mexico policy only applies to asylum seekers requesting asylum at the ports of entry, as I understand it. It doesn't apply to border jumpers who entered illegally and then request asylum, illegal aliens who are not requesting asylum or UACs, and Mexico will only take so many at one time from one location.

Guatemala is NOT stopping anything!

Neither is Mexico, El Salvador or Honduras.

Put all those countries on the Travel Ban List and stop them coming here!

Send them all back and their UAC's!
