Brownsville mayor: Border Patrol releasing migrants without paperwork
Brownsville mayor: Border Patrol releasing migrants without paperwork

Migrant families arrive at Good Neighbor Settlement House after being released from a local detention center and escorted by U.S. Border Patrol to the non-profit multi-service agency in Brownsville for assistance Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2019. (Miguel Roberts/The Brownsville Herald via AP)
Brownsville Mayor Tony Martinez said Saturday from the Good Neighbor Settlement House that federal officials have dropped off 100 migrants without any paperwork or documentation.
“Well, I’m trying to capture the essence of what is actually happening,” Martinez said as staff and volunteers hustled to and from the nonprofit’s auditorium where dozens of migrants were being fed. “What happens is we’ve now got some folks in here that are being dropped off without paperwork and frankly not at the bus station, but close thereto.”
Without paperwork, recently released migrants cannot prove they were processed by Border Patrol and would likely just be arrested again at an immigration checkpoint.
Saturday marks the fifth day Border Patrol has been mass releasing migrants from the McAllen processing center into Brownsville.
So far, federal officials have released approximately 750 migrants into Brownsville.
On Saturday, as of 11 a.m., the Good Neighbor Settlement House has received 100 people and staff, volunteers and city officials were expecting two more busloads for an approximate 100 more people.
Brownsville Police Department Commander James Paschall told Martinez during an interview that police are working to identify the buses and the federal officials who are dropping migrants off without paperwork.
On Friday, City Manager Noel Bernal said federal officials communicated to him that an estimated 5,600 people would be dropped off in Brownsville, Harlingen and McAllen over the next few days.

Brownsville Police Department Commander James Paschall said Saturday afternoon that Border Patrol acknowledged it made a mistake when it dropped off migrants in downtown Brownsville without any paperwork.
Paschall said Border Patrol brought the paperwork for the migrants to the Good Neighbor Settlement House, which is now able to process them.
Saturday morning Mayor Tony Martinez said from the Good Neighbor Settlement House that federal officials dropped off the 100 migrants without any documentation.
"Well, I'm trying to capture the essence of what is actually happening," Martinez said as staff and volunteers hustled to and from the nonprofit's auditorium where dozens of migrants were being fed. The asylum claimants need the paperwork to prove they are in the process of seeking asylum. It is my understanding, asylum seekers can legally work in the United States after being here six months. Well, to claim the work permit, they have to prove their application is being processed for asylum.
Furthermore, being properly processed also means fingerprints were taken, police record check conducted, health screening done and the DHS database was checked for potential terrorist and illegal alien returnees.
Releasing them without processing, which means there is no record, is incompetent and a dereliction of duty."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**
