Jose Cortes/ReutersAs the U.S. continues to see an influx of illegal immigration, former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director Tom Homan is putting his foot down that Congress needs to fix asylum laws.
A new migrant caravan formed recently, and as of late Thursday, at least 395 people boarded “The Beast” train, also known as “La Bestia,” on their journey to U.S. soil, according to Reuters.
Appearing on “Fox & Friends” on Saturday, the former ICE director called for there to be legislative changes to close the asylum loopholes, as well as consequences.
“We need consequences,” Homan said. “We need deterrents.”
Jose Cortes/ReutersHoman declared that ICE must find and remove the family units “who had their day in court or they didn’t show up in court” and are cheating the U.S. immigration system by staying illegally.
He doubled down that there need to be consequences for those who sought asylum but were found ineligible: “You just cannot say, ‘Come. We’ll give you due process. You get ordered removed. You just disappear in society, and no one’s going to make you leave.'”
Eighty-eight percent of immigrants who claim asylum in the U.S. lose their cases, according to Homan.

This surge in immigrants trying to cross into U.S. soil illegally has left border law enforcement “overwhelmed,” as U.S. Border Patrol Chief Brian Hastings explained by echoing Homan’s demand for Congress to change the “outdated laws,” IJR Red reported on Friday.
While there were nearly 440,000 immigrants apprehended on Thursday at the southern border, according to Hastings, he noted that there are “no consequences that we can apply” to the “family units” currently.
Jose Cortes/ReutersAs IJR News reported, President Donald Trump reiterated his threat to close parts of the southern border when he tweeted on Wednesday, “Mexico must apprehend the remainder or we will be forced to close that section of the Border & call up the Military.”
