IMMIGRATION: Congressional Asian caucus calls for reducing deportations

U.S. Rep. Mark Takano, D-Riverside, and other members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Wednesday unveiled a list of immigration-related proposals that includes expanding the number of people who would be temporarily barred from deportation.

The eight-page memorandum is the latest effort by Asian/Pacific Islander, Latino, immigrant and other groups to pressure the Obama administration to either halt or scale back deportations. About two million people have been deported since Obama took office.

The memo calls on the Obama administration to expand a program – called deferred action – announced in June 2012 that allows undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children and meet other conditions to obtain a temporary reprieve from deportation and legally live and work in the United States.

The memo recommends that parents, spouses and siblings of deferred-action recipients, and of U.S. citizens and legal residents, be considered for a similar reprieve. In addition, deferred action should be made available to any undocumented immigrant who entered the United States before age 16, not just those were under age 31 as of June 15, 2012, which is the current policy.

The memo says the expansion of deferred action would help “prevent unnecessary separation of families.”

Takano, who is part of the four-member leadership team of the caucus, said in a written statement that “the family unit is one of the cornerstones of our nation, and as the debate around our immigration system progresses, we must do all we can to keep as many families together as possible. By adopting the changes in today’s letter, President Obama and the Department of Homeland Security can give millions of potential Americans the security that they and their families deserve.”

The memo also calls for the government to stop prioritizing the deportations of people whose only offense is an immigration-related violation.

Among the other changes suggested is the end of deportations without hearings and an end to jail detainers for people who are arrested for all but the most serious crimes. A detainer is a request from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for a local jail to hold someone until ICE can determine the person’s immigration status.

The memo also recommends an end to the 287g program, under which ICE trains law-enforcement officials in some states and counties – including San BernardinoCounty – to determine whether inmates may be in the country illegally. RiversideCounty hasn’t yet decided whether to renew a 287g agreement with ICE. The caucus also is calling for an end to Secure Communities. Under that program, the fingerprints of all jail inmates are checked with a federal immigration database.

Takano said that Secure Communities “does nothing but encourage profiling and create fear amongst immigrant populations, and they should be targeting criminals for deportation, not families.”

Hey, Latinos - most of whom are Mexican - are getting away with it, why should we be surprised to see others jumping on the de facto amnesty bandwagon. The word is out: 'Bama doesn't even want to enforce the laws.
