Donald Trump to Deploy National Guard to the Mexican Border

Donald Trump to deploy National Guard to the Mexican border 'as soon as tonight'

    April 4, 2018

    Alexandra Wilts

Donald Trump will deploy National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border as soon as tonight, the Secretary of Homeland Security has said.

Over the past few days, Mr Trump has been ramping up his rhetoric on immigration and border security, calling on Congress to change the US’s “very weak” border laws.

He also said he wanted to send the military to guard the border “until we can have a wall and proper security” – plans that will now come to fruition.

“The president has directed that the Department of Defence and the Department of Homeland Security work together with our governors to deploy the National Guard to our southwest border,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, speaking at the White House. ”The president will be signing a proclamation to that effect today.”

Ms Nielson added that the troops would be assisting the US Border Patrol, which currently guards the border, but would not be involved in enforcement.

She did not provide information on how many troops would be deployed, how long their deployment will last and how much it will cost.

Instead, echoing Mr Trump, she railed against the country’s current immigration laws, saying the current system “rewards bad behaviour” and “it’s time to act”.

The administration has drafted legislation and will ask Congress to provide the legal authority and resources to address “this crisis at our borders”, Ms Nielson said.

Prior to the announcement, the president met with Ms Nielson, Defence Secretary James Mattis and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to discuss border issues.

Mr Sessions said he would soon be announcing additional Justice Department “initiatives to restore legality to the southern border”.

Both Barack Obama and George W Bush sent troops to the border during their presidencies. But it is unclear why Border Patrol agents would need help from the Defence Department right now, given that illegal border crossings are at the lowest level in decades, the Washington Post reported.

An adviser who speaks frequently with Mr Trump told the newspaper that the president is worried about losing support from his political base. He has not yet received enough funding from Congress to finance his border wall and immigration policies.

This week, Mr Trump demanded that a caravan of roughly 1,000 migrants, most of whom fled Honduras, be prevented from entering the US through Mexico. He claimed that Mexico had “absolute power” to keep them from entering the US illegally. Pueblo Sin Fronteras, a migrants rights group that organised the journey, said the caravan’s destination was not the US border.

Earlier this month, Mr Trump grudgingly signed a massive budget bill that allocated $1.6bn for border security this year, even though the president at one point wanted $25bn to fully fund the construction of his border wall.

Mr Trump had originally said the wall would be paid for by Mexico. The president has now reportedly floated the idea of getting the Pentagon to pay for it since the department received a huge boost in funding under the budget measure.
The deployment of troops could lead to another standoff over immigration and border security between the US and Mexico.

Before the announcement, the Mexican government had formally asked for clarification on Mr Trump’s statements saying he planned to deploy troops to the border.

Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray said in a tweet that “the Mexican government will define its reaction on the basis of that clarification, and always in defence of our sovereignty and national interests.”

National Border Patrol Council President: I 100% Agree with Sending Troops to Border

    (Video at Link)

    April 4, 2018

    Ian Hanchett

On Wednesday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Co.,” National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd expressed 100% agreement with the president putting troops on the border.

Judd said, “I agree with this 100%. … [T]his increases certainty of apprehension of both illegal aliens, as well as illegal contraband like opioids. What it does is it allows the military or National Guard, whichever one it is that’s going to go to the border, it allows them to take over our surveillance positions, such as watching the cameras in the camera rooms, watching the sensors, or being in the skyboxes, and all of the other different surveillance activities that we perform. And that allows us to put our agents on the border, which will then allow us to apprehend those things that are crossing the border, which will put a dent in this multi-billion-dollar industry that the cartels are currently running. So, yeah, I agree with it 100%.”

"Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray said in a tweet that “the Mexican government will define its reaction on the basis of that clarification, and always in defence of our sovereignty and national interests.”"

    -------------------------

Their "national interests" are to dump their people and drugs over our border! To continue $40 BILLION in remittances going into their countries that we must put a 15% tax on! To continue making a fortune off their drug and human trafficking trade.

They have NO interest in keeping their people, rooting out their corrupt police and government officials, or providing a better life for THEIR people. They are a corrupt Narco State...we do not want their people coming here. They breed these "kids" who end up in gangs, now we are stuck cleaning up this problem. We do not want them or their "children"!

It is in OUR "national interest" to deploy the National Guard and to sign an Executive Order that ANY AND ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS will not be put in detention centers...they will be processed and deported within 24 hours. They will also be TURNED AWAY at our borders.

We also need to cut of ALL foreign aid to Mexico and Central America until this invasion stops 100%.

They have played this extortion game long enough! Congress needs to act...we voted YOU in...now stop this problem.

Trump to Deploy National Guard Troops Along the Border

    April 4, 2018

    Leif Reigstad

For the third time in three presidencies, National Guard troops will be sent to the border. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen told reporters at the White House. President Donald Trump signed a proclamation Wednesday evening to send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in an apparent effort to stop undocumented immigrants from crossing into the United States.

“The president has directed that the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security to work together with our governors to deploy our National Guard to our southwest border to assist the border patrol,” Nielsen said, according to Politico, adding that the federal government is still working with state officials to finalize a deployment plan. She said troops could be deployed to the border as early as Wednesday night.

“My top priority as Governor is ensuring the safety and security of Texans, and securing our southern border has always been essential to that mission,” Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement on Wednesday, responding to the news from Washington. “In my time as Governor, Texas has maintained a continuous presence of National Guard members along the border, and we’ve added hundreds of permanent Department of Public Safety troopers to the region. Today’s action by the Trump Administration reinforces Texas’ longstanding commitment to secure our southern border and upholds the Rule of Law, and I welcome the support. Going forward, Texas will continue to implement robust border security efforts, and this partnership will help ensure we are doing everything we can to stem the flow of illegal immigration.”

Democratic candidate for governor, Lupe Valdez, blasted Abbott for his support of Trump’s move. “I’ve spent a 42-year career in law enforcement investigating drug traffickers and protecting Americans at home and abroad. I can tell you a ‘boys and their toys’ approach to border security doesn’t work. What we need to do is fix a broken immigration system and get smart about border security.

“In 2014, when Central American refugees, women and children, fled violence and extreme poverty in Central America, Texas Republicans responded by calling out the National Guard, but Texans, their businesses, and local non-profits met them with open arms. This is who we are.

“We all know Governor Abbott will praise Trump as he bashes an entire region of Texas and places our state’s economy at risk. Now more than ever, we need a governor who will demand real solutions for our broken immigration system, rather than standby as our border communities are harmed by rhetoric disconnected from reality.”

The last time National Guard troops were sent to the border was in 2014, when former Texas Governor Rick Perry spent millions of dollars to activate up to 1,000 troops at a time when Central American migrants were illegally crossing the border in overwhelmingly large numbers. Perry had framed the move as a rebuttal to a federal government that he perceived as being too soft on undocumented immigration, characterizing then-President Barack Obama’s border security efforts as “lip service and empty promises.” Obama had rolled out a nearly identical National Guard deployment four years earlier, sending 1,200 troops to the border at a cost of $500 million, before scaling the deployment back in the beginning of 2012. In 2006, former President George W. Bush sent 6,000 troops to the southern border as part of Operation Jump Start, which lasted two years and ended up costing $1.2 billion. A spokesman for the Texas Military Department told the Austin American-Statesman on Wednesday that there are about 100 Texas national guardsmen currently deployed at the border.

Shortly after Perry deployed National Guard troops to the border, reports surfaced suggesting that there wasn’t much for them to do. In September 2014, the Washington Post reported that troops “saw little activity after taking their positions in portable towers and Border Patrol vehicles along the dirt roads and levees that overlooked the dense brush near the Rio Grande,” and “found themselves fighting boredom.” Some listened to music to kill time while staring at the brush along the riverbank.

The Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 limits U.S. military entities to non-enforcement roles within the U.S. when they are deployed by the President. Trump administration officials told NBC News that the troops won’t have physical contact with any immigrants and they won’t be tasked with processing them at the border. Similar to past deployments, troops will assist Border Patrol agents by providing air surveillance and by monitoring cameras along the border.

Trump had hinted earlier this week that he was planning to send some type of U.S. military personnel to the border. “We have very bad laws for our border, and we are going to be doing some things—I’ve been speaking with General (Jim) Mattis—we’re going to be doing things militarily,” Trump told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday morning during a meeting with Baltic presidents, according to the New York Times. Mattis is the secretary of defense. “Until we can have a wall and proper security, we’re going to be guarding our border with the military. That’s a big step. We really haven’t done that before, or certainly not very much before.”

    The evening news just said:

The troops can not confront illegal aliens to physically prevent them from crossing the border, at ports of entry or out in the field.

They will not have the power of arrest and will not participate in any arrest.

They don't know yet who will pay the National Guard.

That's the idiot news. The Troops can arrest and capture and use force to defend our borders and prevent invasions. That's why we have a military. People are confusing an interior law enforcement issue with national defense of our national territory, the whole purpose under the Constitution of having a federally funded and administered military operation.

The posse comitatus and insurrection acts pertain to domestic issues within states and limit to some extent federal military intervention which is to protect against a federal police state and heavy-handedness against citizens who want to riot, protect, rebel, revolt or even have an insurrection, but even that only goes to a point and when it's clear the states can't manage it then the feds can roll in. And that's fine. But that doesn't have anything to do with using our federal military to defend our national borders against invasions by foreign nationals. Two separate issues with two separate remedies. The domestic issue is remedied with some laws. The territorial defense of our nation is remedied by the Constitution with the power and duty to respond, oversee and achieve vested in the President of the United States.

. . . "National Guard troops aren’t sent to the border to literally fight off immigrants — that’s still illegal. They’re not even sent to the border to catch immigrants; only Border Patrol agents are authorized to do that. So during previous mobilizations, the National Guard has done a mix of surveillance and intelligence work to help Border Patrol agents track down immigrants, and support work to help process those immigrants once they’re apprehended.". . .
