Lost amid the hubbub over Gov. Charlie Baker’s opposition to accepting Syrian refugees in Massachusetts is that there are already almost 100 living here.
Massachusetts resettled 70 men, women, and children who fled war-torn Syria from October 2014 to September this year, according to numbers the Massachusetts Office for Refugees and Immigrants provided to WBUR. Boston and the North Shore accepted six refugees, Merrimack Valley five, Worcester County 27, and Hampden County 32.

In that same time period, Massachusetts also accepted another 15 “secondary migrants,” or Syrian refugees who came to another U.S. state before moving to Massachusetts.
Those numbers are an increase on the amount of Syrian refugees who arrived in Massachusetts in prior years. Just four were resettled in Massachusetts from October 2013 to September 2014 and eight arrived the year before that.
So what are the new lives of those refugees-turned-Americans like? WBUR had an insightful look into one family that now resides in the Springfield suburb of Westfield.
Zid Al-Nassar, his wife Zenab, and their four children fled Daraa, Syria in May 2013 the day after a bomb demolished their cellphone supply store, WBUR reports. After a harrowing trip to Egypt and then to the U.S., they’re navigating the new world of the Commonwealth.
“The children are in school and Zid says they’re doing well and learning English,” WBUR writes. “Zid is also learning English and recently landed his first job at a food processing plant in Turners Falls, which is about 40 miles away.”
Baker was one of a number of governors who said they would refuse Syrian refugees from their states. Those decisions come days after officials found the passport of a Syrian refugee at the scene of the terrorist attacks in Paris, though it’s not yet clear whether that passport is real.
Despite Baker’s statement, governors do not actually have the authority to keep refugees out of their states. The Refugee Act of 1980 makes clear that responsibility for immigration and refugee resettlement resides with the federal government.
