A Guatemalan man convicted of killing a National Football League player and Uber driver in a car accident in early 2018 has been sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported, according to the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana.
U.S. District Chief Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson ordered Manuel Orrego-Zavala, 38, spend 42 months in prison for the felony charge of illegally entering the U.S. on two prior occasions. The punishment is separate from the 16 years prison time Magnus-Stinson received for the deaths of Indianapolis Colts player Edwin Jackson and Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe on Feb. 4, 2018.

“Mr. Orrego-Zavala re-entered the country illegally for the second time before he put the public safety of Indianapolis at risk and took the lives of two innocent men on Feb. 4, 2018,” U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler said in a statement.
Orrego-Zavala had been convicted previously on two drug felony charges, as well as removed from the country in 2007 and again in 2009.
On the day of the fatal crash, the Guatemalan man was driving a pick-up truck west on Interstate 70 when he swerved and struck Monroe and Jackson. The two men had been parked on the side of the highway because Jackson was sick and Monroe had pulled over. The victims were killed on impact, according to court documents.
Orrego-Zavala did not have a license and told police his name was Alex Cabrera Gonsales. He was later confirmed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to have been deported on two previous occasions, as well as charged and convicted on "many" other crimes.
Following news of the deaths, President Trump tweeted about the incident.
"So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed @Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson. This is just one of many such preventable tragedies. We must get the Dems to get tough on the Border, and with illegal immigration, FAST!" Trump wrote.
