Mexican president: Drug lord Chapo Guzman captured

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced Friday that fugitive drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was recaptured seven months after he escaped from a maximum security prison.

An official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be quoted by name said Guzman was apprehended after a shootout with Mexican marines in the city of Los Mochis, in Guzman's home state of Sinaloa.

Responding to what was seen as one of the biggest embarrassments of his administration — Guzman's July 11 escape through a tunnel from Mexico's highest-security prison — Pena Nieto wrote in his Twitter account on Friday: "mission accomplished: we have him."


Five people have been killed and one Mexican marine wounded in the clash.

The Mexican Navy said in a statement that marines acting on a tip raided a home in the town of Los Mochis before dawn. They were fired on from inside the structure. Five suspects were killed and six others arrested. The marine's injuries were not life threatening.

At the home marines seized two armored vehicles, eight long guns, one handgun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher

A top White House official said Sunday he was “appalled” by boastful comments Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loer made in a Rolling Stone interview about being the world’s biggest supplier of drugs.
The Mexican drug kingpin bragged about his empire in a secret interview with Sean Penn for the magazine, telling the Hollywood star: “I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world.”
“I was appalled by his bragging … about an epidemic that’s sweeping this country on heroin addiction,” White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week.” “I was appalled by his bragging to the interviewers in Rolling Stone that he moves more heroin than anyone in the world.”
McDonough also told Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union” that the comments were “maddening.” “We see a heroin epidemic, opioid addiction epidemic in this country,” he said. “So, we’re going to stay on top of this, with our Mexican counterparts, until we get that back in the box. ”
Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, was recaptured on Friday after a months-long international manhunt following his escaping from a maximum-security prison. He was on the lam during the interview, which was published Saturday on Rolling Stone’s website.
Mexican officials on Sunday formally launched the process to extradite the notorious drug lord to the U.S., according to the Associated Press.
