    Economics Deterring Undocumented Immigrants

    Economics Deterring Undocumented Immigrants

New studies have found that the undocumented population has recently declined, and most researchers agree that the driving force behind this phenomenon is economics.

    Sunday September 7th, 2008

(NewsUSA) - Hardly surprising, given that the majority of undocumented immigrants come from nations where opportunities are scarce. Migrants would not leave their families if good opportunities for economic security existed in their home countries.

Some argue that heightened immigration enforcement, rather than economic downturn, has caused a decrease in undocumented immigration over the past year. But all evidence points to the contrary.

According to a June 2008 report by Wayne Cornelius of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies, "The pattern of undocumented migrants responding to economic conditions rather than policy decisions has continued during the border enforcement build-up that began in 1993." Cornelius also points out in a 2006 paper that since 1993, "We have spent more than $20 billion on this project -; the population of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. has more than doubled." During these years, the magnet of economic prosperity was stronger than the threat of border enforcement.

Data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis show that the economic downturn in many of the industries where undocumented immigrants tend to be employed began well before August 2007. For instance, the construction industry started to shed jobs in the first quarter of 2007. Job growth in the service sector also began to slow during the early months of 2007, showing a direct correlation with economic decline and decreased undocumented immigration.

The only solution some politicians and think tanks offer to stop undocumented immigration is an amped-up deportation-only agenda. These critics claim that if the recent decline in the undocumented population were sustained, it could cut the illegal population in half within just five years. But consider that in FY 2007 alone, over 275,000 undocumented immigrants were removed from the U.S. This hardly puts a dent in the estimated undocumented population of 12 million.

The U.S. cannot deport its way out of this problem. Where economic opportunity knocks, willing workers, documented or not, will always answer.

One thing this article does not take into account is E-Verify.
E-Verify is only mandatory in the Federal government hiring of certain areas of employeement, and then in certain states. BUT even in certain states like N.C. (I think) even though the state voted that all government contracts have to use E-Verify, they found hundreds of companies that had not yet signed up.
I think if E-Verify is able to be implemented across the nation for all jobs then you will see a very swift and dramatic response of self deportation.
I think if the economy continues to remain slow and during this time more states and cities vote into law E-Verify, then America might have a chance to remain America.

This article takes little into account. It's an open borders story.

Round them up, deport them, guard the borders so they can't get back in and that will solve the problem.

Hey Government and Open Borders Fanatics: Pretend it's 1941 and they're Germans, then tell US you can't defend our nation.

Come on, tell US that the United States is unprotected from foreign aggression and incapable of defending itself.

    Come on, I dare you.

Keep up the Good Work, ICE. Hey, ICE, get the President, Lindsay Graham and John McCain on the BoobToob and tell them to tell the illegal aliens to GO HOME, that this is their Most Wise Option, and they'll regret not leaving our country voluntarily.

Then tell Bush to call the President of Mexico and tell him we're cutting all US Aid to Mexico until every illegal alien who entered our country across the Mexican Border is out of here.

Welcome to Alipac we're glad to have you. Unfortunately, for CA, the legislators here are trying to PROHIBIT the use of E-verify. They passed AB 2076 that has gone to Arnold's desk for signature. This is a very dangerous bill because it prohibits the cities, counties and the state from using it. This opens up all of infrastructure to allow any one to work on our waterways, ports, airports, electrical grids, etc. This is EXTREMELY dangerous and the Dems at the capitol don't care. They want their votes.

We need to stay on top of the E-verify renewal, it passed congress, but there are those brainless wonders in the Senate who want to do away with it. When the Senators come back from their vacations, we need to hit the phones hard about saving this program!
