AZ. Shooting reported at Nogales port of entry

Shooting reported at Nogales port of entry

    • A.E. Araiza / Arizona Daily Star

A tractor-trailer drives away from Nogales’ Mariposa Port of Entry, which grew from four to eight commercial lanes in recent years.

A shooting involving federal authorities was reported Thursday afternoon at a Nogales port of entry.

Nogales police received a 911 call around 2 p.m. stating shots were fired at the Mariposa Port of Entry and federal authorities were involved in the shooting, said Nogales Police Department spokesman Sgt. Robert Fierros.

Police shut down southbound traffic through the Mariposa Port of Entry for the rest of the day while federal authorities investigate the incident, Fierros said. Northbound traffic is still coming through the port.

The Nogales International newspaper reported the assistant port director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Nogales said the incident involved the U.S. Border Patrol.

The Border Patrol is waiting on a field report about the incident before issuing a statement, an agency spokesman said.

Law enforcement vehicles are parked in front of the southbound lanes at the Mariposa Port of Entry following a shooting incident Thursday afternoon.

The Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales was temporarily closed Thursday afternoon following an incident that appears to have involved shots fired by a federal officer.

Sgt. Robert Fierros of the Nogales Police Department said NPD officers are helping to divert traffic from the port to the downtown Dennis DeConcini crossing as federal authorities investigate the incident that occurred at around 2 p.m.

The incident involved someone who was trying to get into Mexico, Fierros said.

“We hear there were shots fired by federal authorities,” he said.

“We hear that there is a person that may have sustained injuries,” he added, specifying that the injured person was not believed to be a law enforcement officer.

The victim was reportedly taken by ambulance to nearby Carondelet Holy Cross Hospital.

Joe Agosttini, assistant port director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Nogales, said the incident involved the U.S. Border Patrol. CBP closed down the port to allow for an investigation, he said.

A Border Patrol spokesman said the agency is preparing a statement on the matter.

NPD said southbound lanes at the port will remain closed for the rest of the day. Northbound lanes were reopened after a brief closure.

Driver Shot at US-Mexico Border After Trying to Evade Agents

    • By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

    NOGALES, Ariz. — Sep 8, 2016, 9:15 PM ET

A truck driver has been shot and wounded by federal authorities at the Mariposa port of entry in Nogales after allegedly trying to evade Border Patrol agents.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Thursday.

They say the unidentified truck driver swerved his vehicle in an apparent attempt to hit officers working at the port.

The man was shot multiple times and airlifted to a Tucson hospital. His condition isn't immediately known.

A passenger in the truck suffered minor injuries.

    No border agents were hurt.

Authorities say the Mariposa port remains closed for southbound traffic as the shooting incident is investigated.

Nogales police spokesman Sgt. Robert Fierros says northbound traffic coming into the United States still is allowed to go through the Mariposa port.

Shots Fired at Port of Nogales as Driver Attempts to Flee To Mexico

    Release Date:
    September 9, 2016

TUCSON, AZU.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and a U.S. Border Patrol agent were involved in a use-of-force incident Friday afternoon while working at the Port of Nogales Mariposa Crossing.

Reports show that a subject attempted to evade Border Patrol agents by driving south through the port of entry (POE), and then swerved his vehicle at officers who were working there.

OFO officers and a Border Patrol agent fired their service weapons at the driver during his violent assault with a vehicle. The driver sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was airlifted to a Tucson area hospital. There was also a passenger in the vehicle who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and is currently in federal custody.

No officers or agents were injured in the incident.

The incident created a significant impact to southbound traffic through the POE. As a result, southbound traffic lanes through the Mariposa Crossing have been temporarily closed. Traffic has been re-routed as the investigation continues.

The FBI, CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations are jointly investigating the incident. The U.S. Border Patrol and Office of Field Operations are cooperating fully with the investigation.

More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials welcome assistance from the community. Citizens can report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol and remain anonymous by calling1-877-872-7435 toll free. Contacting the Border Patrol to report illicit activity could result in saving someone’s life.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
