EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - An El Paso man has been charged with two counts of vehicle by homicide and resisting arrest in connection with a crash where two undocumented immigrants died following a chase with Border Patrol.
Robert Acevedo, 27, was arrested at about 6 p.m. on April 6 following a car chase he allegedly led Border Patrol agents on that ended when his tires were spiked and the vehicle rolled over, according to court documents. The crash happened in New Mexico on Highway 9 near mile marker 142, about 5 miles outside of Artcraft.
A complaint affidavit from the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office says that deputies were called to the scene after the arrest and Acevedo was already in the custody of Border Patrol.
The vehicle had 11 migrants and two of them died from injuries they sustained during the crash, the affidavit said.
According to a news release on the day of the crash, the vehicle failed to yield to emergency lights and sirens, prompting agents to deploy a tire deflation device. The names of the two people who died have not been released.
Acevedo's home town is listed as El Paso.
A search of El Paso court records shows an extensive history of criminal charges and arrests. He has been charged with 19 various crimes ranging from possession of a controlled substance to burglary of a vehicle. Of his charges, at least eight are felony charges.
