    Action Alert
El Pueblo Calls for Tolerant Dialogue among North Carolinians

For the past ten years, El Pueblo has worked diligently with government agencies, schools, law enforcement, hospitals, and many other North Carolina institutions to address the challenges of our growing state. We have committed to doing this with the utmost respect for the historic traditions of our state, the integrity of our laws, and the best interests of North Carolina.

One of the major challenges facing North Carolina and the country as a whole is that of a broken immigration system. Few would disagree that our immigration system is in need of comprehensive reform. Unfortunately, our state has been placed in a position of dealing with the consequences of immigration laws that are simply not working. El Pueblo is a strong advocate for comprehensive immigration reform and a return to safe, orderly, and legal immigration. We are actively working at the federal level to support legislation that addresses this very issue.

However, the challenge before us as a state is to manage our current immigration situation while the federal government addresses their responsibilities in re-working our immigration system. As an organization that advocates for the quality of life of all immigrants, El Pueblo has participated in many of the statewide discussions surrounding the immigrant community, proposed legislation, and administrative policies. These are difficult, multi-faceted issues that often involve equally diverse perspectives, viewpoints, and approaches. El Pueblo’s role as an organization has always been to participate in the discussion, bridge differences whenever possible, and work towards a stronger North Carolina.

It concerns us that a small group of people have chosen to escalate the debate and use rhetoric that is not constructive, not grounded on identifying solutions, and is damaging to all North Carolinians who value our democratic process.

Following are some excerpts from recent correspondence received by El Pueblo which stand in contrast with the views of North Carolinians working to create solutions that benefit our state:

“What kills me is this, momma-cita steals her way across the border and has a baby. Guess what? Baby-cita is now a US citizen and momma and pappa-cita are now allowed to stay and care for the babby (sic). But it doesn’t end there. Since most mexicanos (sic) don’t practice birth control, they have litters of babies.

“America was founded for European Americans, not for any and all Third World sheet-rock hangers and busboys who managed to slip in under the radar screen.

“Go back to Mexico and take as many of your legal and illegal kinsmen with you to maintain your country, and we will tend to ours.

“We are not so foolish to believe that when we, as White Americans, are no longer the majority that we will be treated as the rightfully heirs of the country of our fathers because you people are biologically and culturally alien to us and always will be.

El Pueblo firmly believes that most North Carolinians value constructive and tolerant dialogue even when viewpoints do not coincide. Healthy debate and discussion have always been a vital part of our democracy and the foundation for good public policy. This is an important and emotional debate, but we should stay focused on a constructive dialogue that contributes to the strengthening of North Carolina

Personally, I think the more Bazan-Manson posts on the website and talks to the press, the better for ALIPAC.

Can we get copies of the letters she supposedly received?

How do we know they actually exist?
