Rep. Says Utah Needs More Immigration Officers

    Aug 14, 2007 7:58 am US/Mountain

Rep. Says Utah Needs More Immigration Officers
CEDAR CITY Utah Rep. Jim Matheson says there aren't enough Immigration and Customs Enforcement staff to handle the workload in southwestern Utah.

In a letter sent to the secretary of Homeland Security, Matheson asked that ICE staffing be increased for that part of the state. He says there are only four agents working a seven-county area that is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the country.

ICE officials say they are aware of the problem and are working to alleviate some of the pressure by next year.

Matheson's letter comes after he received complaints from St. George police among others.

Matheson claims that the telecommunications system which officers use to determine a person's immigration status is inadequate. He says it is not uncommon for officers to wait up to four hours for an answer to an inquiry.

He also says if a person is found in violation of immigration law, they are often released because of understaffing.

SoSad, yes unfortunately St. George joins the ranks of many other American towns plagued with this problem.

The entire state is over run. I live in northern Utah. I can not shop at the local grocery at lunch time because the illegals are at the deli counter getting lunch and harassing me at the same time. (I'm a blond female) I even talked to the local police chief who informed me his hands are tied. He had arrested an illegal because his name came back as "take to federal detention facility". There was a ten year outstanding warrant for his arrest. When they arrived in SLC at ICE headquarters, ICE refused to take the man because it was not a priority. The local police chief was livid!!! He says "Utah hands out driving privilege cards to anyone! His officers can do nothing about it. Every night they arrest or pull over known illegals committing crimes, but their hands are tied! Catch and release. One of his officers married a woman from Scotland and is still fighting with immigration to get her citizenship! Imagine how that policeman feels when he pulls over a known illegal criminal that our government wants to give amnesty to.

As far as St.George------Every construction company should be investigated!!!!! St.George is the largest growing city in Utah and probably the Western US. The builders are pulling down unbelievable profits!!!! Start fining the business owners!!! Put the owners in jail for repeat offenses. Its not rocket science!!!
