Immigration Raid At Dulles Airport, 42 Detained

DULLES, Va. (WUSA) -- Immigration agents met construction workers early Wednesday morning as they arrived on the job at Dulles International Airport. Forty-two men were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. All are accused of being in the country illegally.

Special Agent In Charge Mark McGraw said this operation is "crucial to ICE's homeland security mission". McGraw said they need to know who is entering airports and other critical infrastructure.

Agents waited at a gate for the workers to arrive in buses and other vehicles. About 200 were interviewed.

An airport spokesman said the workers did not have access to secure areas of the airport. Rob Yingling said it is up to the contractors to ensure workers have the proper documentation. Yingling was unable to provide specifics on what role the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has in ensuring the contractors follow immigration laws.

A similar operation at Dulles occurred in 2006.

The National Capital Immigration Coalition has planned a press conference and vigil at ICE's office on Prosperity Avenue at 7:30 PM. The group claims that relatives and friends have been unable to get information about those detained.

ICE says it has a toll-free hotline for that information: 866-341-3858.

Vigil Held for 42 Suspected Illegals Arrested in ICE Raid at Dulles Airport

A vigil was held outside of ICE headquarters for 42 suspected illegal aliens who were arrested in a raid at Dulles International Airport (web|news) Wednesday.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents made the arrests about 5.a.m. at a checkpoint for workers entering the airport grounds. Officials say none of those arrested had access to secure areas of the airport.

ICE agents interviewed more than 200 individuals at the checkpoint, according to a statement. Most of those detained worked for a contractor on construction projects at the airport.

"It is crucial to ICE's homeland security mission that we identify who is coming and going from sensitive areas," said Mark McGraw, Deputy Special Agent in Charge for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Washington-area Field Office.

Several family members and immigration advocates protested outside of ICE headquarters, demanding the workers receive due process. "They are arresting people who are honest, people who have been building America and they arrest them. What we are demanding right now is that they give a chance to have an attorney."

The nephew of Senon Ortiz was one of the 42 construction workers arrested at the airport. "We want the U.S. government to think before it begins breaking up families and treating hard-working men like criminals."

One woman, who was afraid to be identified, was trying to find her husband. With tears running down her face, she said, "We don't do anything wrong in this country. We just come looking to better our situation."

Those detained are being interviewed, fingerprinted, photographed and entered into Department of Homeland Security databases at a local ICE office, officials said.

None of the people arrested is believed to be involved in terrorist activity, ICE said.

Relatives and friends wishing to check on the custody status and detention location of those detained may call ICE's toll-free number, 1-866-341-3858.

A similar raid took place in June 2006 at the airport, resulting in 55 arrests.

Seems that there should be any number of major construction projects where I.C.E. could score big. They could just pull all of the contractor's I-9 forms, and check the employees that way.

Maybe I.C.E. could hire a person in each town, with a car outfitted with large I.C.E. decals on the sides, to drive to all of the local construction sites. Should cause any number of workers to run for the hills.

All the whiner protestors in this story just confirm my opinion that the illegals that are here have absolutely zero education. Their reasons against the raid are downright DUH? No comprehension and logic skills at all. "Not doing anything wrong?" Gimme a break. I'm soooooo tired of that excuse I refuse to even respond. Sheesh!
