The Minutemen are coming, the Minutemen are coming!

    www.nctimes.com

By: JOHN VAN DOORN - Staff Writer

It appears that the Minuteman Project, the members of which say they want to help the Border Patrol patrol the borders in spite of the fact the U.S. Border Patrol wants them to mind their own business and go away, is on the edge of greatness.

First, it has left Arizona, plans a quick stay in Texas, and then on to infiltrate the land of the Border Patrol in San Diego County. Late summer is the aim. This will add stature to the Minutemen and their cause; they will be operating in and near the glories of a large and sunny metropolitan area that sports its own ocean and a rather studied culture, and they will get much attention.

San Diego's borders are hopping, and the place is photogenic, as are the tourists. Movies get made in San Diego (and along the border) and that is de facto greatness.

Second, the Minuteman Project, like all loud movements, has attracted some dead serious opposition around here. William Finn Bennett, North County Times writer on border issues, reported this last week.

Several groups of unembarrassed peaceful mien have already spoken up. One was the American Friends Service Committee, a euphemism for Quakers. They intend to patrol these patrollers who will be patrolling the Border Patrol as it patrols the border.

That's practically textbook greatness. It has been said that you get measured by the character of your enemies; Quakers are very well-known and of excellent character.

Said the head of the local committee: "And if they come we will have a response and use our First Amendment rights to oppose (them)."

The opposition groups have other names as well, but public-relations protocol demands an umbrella title that will ring down the ages, as "Minuteman" has rung.

    We suggest "Clockwatchers."

It has the obvious connection to time (minute) in the use of the word clock, and then the watchers part wraps it up. It's a goal thing.

There is something so purely American in what the Minutemen are doing and saying, and in what the opposing groups offer, that one can hardly refrain from lifting a glass to Francis Scott Key and singing once more the praises of Millard Fillmore.

    To recapitulate:

    # The Mexico-America border is porous. Has been for years. Mexicans without documents (MWDs) rush north for better lives. Or hauling drugs.

    # The Border Patrol is a thin green line. Try as it will, the patrol just can't keep up with the border gaps and the thousands of MWDs; many get through. This in spite of a grotesque wall between San Diego and Tijuana that threatens to stretch to Fort Lauderdale or thereabouts. But the patrol does its best, dangerous as the work is.

    # Hardly anybody who matters in government cares that the patrol is like a sieve. Except perhaps Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Austrian immigrant who became governor of California with very foreign ideas. He said not long ago that the border ought to be sealed off to keep "them" out.

    # Enter the Minutemen, armed with laptops and some guns. Nobody asked them, but they went in April anyway to the border in Arizona. To protect America by ratting out any Mexicans they spotted slithering through the desert.

Minutemen cannot abide the presence of MWDs in the United States ---- they are not alone ---- and when they write to critics their letters invariably begin this way: "What part of I-L-L-E-G-A-L don't you understand?" Nancy Hubbard of Temecula, a member of the Minuteman Project, said to writer Bennett last week: "It makes sense for us to go there (the San Diego border), because the government will not do its job, and so it's the job of the people to defend this country."

Their president calls them vigilantes, which incenses them.

They figure that now that they've done Arizona, Texas beckons, and then this promised land, these sweet pastures of San Diego, where there is hope and generosity scattered in the streets that once were paved with gold but now are littered with promissory notes and other financial debris.

Minutemen say many patriotic things. On their Web site, they quote prominent Americans. For example, high up on the first page, Ezola Foster, who was a vice-presidential candidate in 2000, running on the Reform Party ticket with Pat Buchanan, is reported to have said: "It is a sad day in America when the lawmakers side with the lawbreakers against the law-abiding citizens."

Foster has led a storied life, lots of controversy and so on. She was a staunch and very public member of the John Birch Society. The Washington Post reported: "Foster loves the Birchers. 'I think they're the most wonderful group of people I've ever met!' she gushes."

In their zeal, Minutemen are reaching for greatness. Arizona got the show noticed, but California it wasn't. Texas is admirable, but it's a sort of New Haven on the Rio Grande.

Golden California is calling. The San Diego Zoo beckons.

It is one thing to be "against" but it is another to aid the enemies of our nation..........

    FACTS:
    1. The "quakers/friends" are friends of the communist/socialist/marxists

    2. These people were DIRECTLY INVOLVED with the VVAW against our military in the 60/70s. They ILLEGALY went to Vietnam and met with COMMUNIST LEADERS thereby aiding and abetting the enemy. In so doing, they were instrumental in giving the enemy further support in KILLING AMERICAN Soldiers!

    3. These people had contact with SOVIET RUSSIA against the USA.

They are NOT people of good character I cannot express my resentment with this article and the reference to the Quakers!!! Those that participated should have been brought up on treason charges along with J Fn Kerry.

What a total fool this writer is! Doesn't he know that according to our constitution every legal CITIZEN becomes militia the moment that they're needed to defend our country?

Until the author of this article has something to express rather than ridicule I hope his computer is on the blink. What crap!! The MMP are the ONLY protectors of our freedoms at this moment and I appreciate them very much.
