A Mexican man who escaped from a Soronan prison last year has been arrested by federal agents in Casa Grande, authorities said.

U.S. marshals arrested Joel Mendez Morales, 23, after surrounding a house and negotiated his surrender Wednesday.

Authorities said Mendez Morales was part of a group of 11 men who shot their way out of a Magdalena de Kino prison last June, injuring three prison guards.
Mendez Morales was serving a seven-year sentence for attempted homicide at the time.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Mendez Morales will remain in federal custody on immigration charges while his return to Mexico is negotiated.
