MESA - He was called "politically invincible," but a recall effort against State Senate President Russell Pearce has quickly picked up in steam in Mesa.

The people leading the effort have already collected thousands of signatures and they're two-thirds of the way to the amount they need to trigger a recall election.

"Russell Pearce has not been a good person for Mesa," says lifelong Republican Mary Lou Boettcher, who moved to Mesa in 1962.

The former librarian is now part of the recall effort.

"One of our biggest helpers has been Senator Pearce himself. Over the past few weeks his actions have underscored our contention that he is too extreme for Arizona," says Chad Snow from Citizens for a Better Arizona.

In the aftermath of SB 1070, Russell Pearce's popularity seemed to skyrocket. But then his own party members turned against him to defeat his latest immigration bills, word got out that he allegedly banned members of the public from the Capitol, and blocked the media from the chamber -- and then add to that the scandal surrounding free football game tickets provided by the Fiesta Bowl and a potential ethics investigation -- and Russell Pearce may have a problem.

The recall effort has recruited hundreds of volunteers who are going door to door in Pearce's district.

"He has promoted that agenda at the exclusion of everything else that is important for Arizona," says Snow.

A recall election would require nearly 8,000 signatures.

We reached out to Pearce and through a spokesman he declined to comment. The group has until the end of May to collect a few thousand more signatures.
