Every deportation flight from the U.S. is an 'alarm bell' as Central American countries brace for coronavirus

The Week April 18, 2020, 1:49 PM EDT

Central American countries are on edge as deportation flights from the United States arrive in the region with passengers who have tested positive for the novel COVID-19 coronavirus, The Associated Press reports.

Because the United States has only tested a limited number of detained immigrants for the virus, there are fears that its spread throughout the U.S. detention centers is much wider than has been reported. Subsequently, that could mean that countries like Guatemala, where more than 1,600 people have returned after being deported from the U.S., could have an unknown number of undetected cases.

Earlier this week, Guatemala's Health Minister Hugo Monroy said at least half of all deportees from the U.S. tested positive, including many who did not exhibit symptoms, while President Alejandro Giammattei said Friday he was suspending deportation flights after numerous passengers that arrived this week were confirmed to be carrying the virus.

Guatemala and other countries like Honduras and El Salvador have instituted quarantine measures, to varying degrees, but there's still a fair amount of worry because of the vulnerable state of their health-care systems. César Ríos, the director of the non-governmental Salvadoran Institute of Migration, said every arriving deportation plane is "an alarm bell" for the region. Dr. Michele Heisler, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, warned Guatemala "will be overwhelmed" because of the U.S.'s "irresponsible" actions. "Every Caravan of thousands of Central Americans FULL OF DISEASES they dumped over the USA border is an ALARM BELL for the United States citizens of the USA"...

    ---------------------------

Many of THEIR disease infected citizens did not "display symptoms" of pregnancy, measles, TB, AIDS, STD's, sepsis, diabetes, gonorrhea, syphilis, tumors, cancer, kidney failure, sepsis, e-coli, respiratory illness, flu, gun shot wounds, broken bones, Giardia, but that did NOT stop Central America from DUMPING their unwanted citizens over our border.

NOW THEY DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THEM BACK AND CARE FOR THEM?

WE ARE NOT YOUR TRAVEL AGENT...YOU PAY FOR IT.

IT COST YOU NOTHING TO DUMP YOUR UNWANTED OVER OUR BORDER, AND NOW YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO NOT TAKE THEM BACK!!!

CENTRAL AMERICA HAD BETTER "BRACE" FOR THAT! BECAUSE WE NEVER "BRACED" FOR YOU TO DO THIS TO US!

Many migrants on U.S. deportation flight had coronavirus, Guatemalan president says

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) - Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei said on Friday a large number of migrants on a deportation flight to Guatemala from the United States this week were infected with the coronavirus, adding that U.S. authorities had confirmed a dozen cases.

Giammattei said 12 randomly selected people on the deportation flight tested positive for coronavirus when examined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

He suggested more on the flight had tested positive as well.

"A large part of it was infected," the president said in a televised address, referring to a flight carrying 73 Guatemalans that left the United States for Guatemala City on Monday.

The Trump administration has pressured Guatemala to keep receiving deported migrants despite growing concern in the poor Central American nation that returnees are bringing the virus with them and could infect remote communities.

Monday's flight has been at the center of a political storm since Guatemalan Health Minister Hugo Monroy this week said up to 75% of passengers on a deportation flight were infected with the virus. The Associated Press later cited a Guatemalan official saying 44 people on the Monday flight were infected.

The United States said on Thursday it had sent a CDC mission to assess the situation and test the migrants, who remain in quarantine in a hospital.

It is not clear when the deportees became infected. There have been 30 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among ICE employees working in the agency's detention facilities, including 13 at the Alexandria Staging Facility in Louisiana, ICE data shows.

Flights deporting Guatemalans from the United States were on Thursday temporarily suspended after reports of the mass infection. Deportation flights had only started again on Monday after a five-day suspension because of earlier infections.

Neither U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which operates the deportation flights or the U.S. embassy in Guatemala immediately responded to requests for comment.
