    Ex-DMV clerk pleads guilty
    Four others arrested

A former clerk with the state Department of Motor Vehicles pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to three crimes involving the sale of fraudulent Colorado driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Prosecutors recommended that Janet Gonzalez, 36, the mother of three children, be given up to three years in federal prison for receiving as much as $10,000 for fake licenses while working at the DMV office in Northglenn.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Taylor said prison time for Gonzalez is likely, although her lawyer, Gil Montoya, said he will argue that she was only a minor player.

Four other people, including another DMV clerk, have been arrested in the same investigation.

Gonzalez was implicated in selling more than 30 bogus licenses but admitted Thursday to accepting cash for nine licenses dating back to 1999. Most of those deals were brokered by Juan Pablo Beltran, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who cooperated with the government's investigation, then pleaded guilty last month to lesser charges in exchange for probation.

The investigation started in the spring of 2004, when William Berrios-Pineda told federal and state agents he had received a license from Gonzalez for $1,800. Berrios- Pineda then agreed to act as a confidential informant and wear a recording device for the government.

In an Oct. 29 transaction, an illegal Mexican immigrant paid Beltran $1,800 for a driver's license and $2,000 for a Social Security number. Following Beltran's instructions, he entered the Northglenn DMV office, found "the only Hispanic woman working there" and told her, "Pablo sent me," according to documents.

Gonzalez typed his information into the computer, then handed him a written test with the answers already filled in. After his picture was taken, he was issued a Colorado driver's license.

Gonzalez pleaded guilty to bribery for accepting money as a public servant, use of the mail for racketeering purposes and obstruction of justice. The last charge was filed after Gonzalez approached an informant in his yard last August after he had been questioned by federal agents.

She admitted threatening him by saying "she had a big family and that he should be careful about what he says so that he would not get hurt."

U.S. District Judge Walker Miller scheduled her sentencing for Nov. 1.
