24 Migrants Apprehended in a Train Grain Hopper Near Corpus Christi, Texas

24 Migrants Apprehended in a Train Grain Hopper Near Corpus Christi, Texas

    Release Date: May 11, 2021

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley Sector (RGV) Border Patrol agents apprehended 24 migrants in a train grain hopper in Robstown, near Corpus Christi, Texas.

Yesterday morning, agents assigned to the Corpus Christi Border Patrol station were conducting train check duties in Robstown, Texas, when they noticed tell-tale signs on the side of a train gain hopper consistent with migrant smuggling. Agents climbed aboard the train and discovered several individuals inside the grain hopper. They were removed and found to be in good health. One individual did require medical assistance for a small cut sustained to his chin when he and the others entered the grain hopper in Laredo, Texas. Laredo is on the border approximately 120 miles southwest of Robstown, Texas. The noncitizens are all adults and nationals from Mexico and Guatemala. All of the noncitizens were taken into Border Patrol custody.

Additionally, RGV agents in collaboration with partners from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, and local police departments, apprehended 63 individuals from seven failed human smuggling events. The additional apprehensions were from human smuggling stash houses, vehicle stops/pursuits, and smuggling cases at Border Patrol checkpoints.

All subjects are being processed accordingly.

Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation. The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.

24 Migrants Found in Rail Car 120 Miles from Border in Texas

24 Migrants Found in Rail Car 120 Miles from Border in Texas

by BOB PRICE 11 May 2021

Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol agents discovered 24 migrants hiding inside a grain hopper rail car near Robstown, Texas, on Monday morning. The migrants appeared to have boarded the train near Laredo, about 120 miles away.

Corpus Christi Border Patrol Station agents performing train check duties on May 10 near Robstown discovered “tell-tale signs” of human smuggling activity on one of the grain hopper railcars, according to information provided by Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol officials. The agents began a search of the train and found 24 migrants hiding inside the grain hopper.

The agents quickly removed the migrants and learned they boarded the train illegally after crossing the border near Laredo. Laredo is located approximately 120 miles southwest of Robstown.

The agents conducted immigration interviews and welfare checks on the migrants. They identified the migrants as foreign nationals from Mexican and Guatemala. All 24 are reported to be adults who are illegally present in the United States. They will likely be removed under Title 42 coronavirus protection protocols put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A medical screening determined all of the migrants to be in good health other than one migrant who cut his chin when he entered the grain hopper in Laredo.

Human smugglers frequently stash migrants inside grain hoppers or lock them into other rail cars.

In March, Laredo Sector agents assigned to the Hebbronville Border Patrol Station found 16 migrants locked inside a conex box loaded on a rail car, Breitbart Texas reported. “This dangerous method of illegal entry into the United States can result in serious injury or death,” Laredo Sector Border Patrol officials said in a written statement.

In September, Laredo Sector Chief Patrol Agent Matthew Hudak tweeted photos of a group of 13 migrants who were locked inside a grain hopper rail car. He said the group were trapped inside a confined space and could not have escaped.
