Fed court opens door for Guatemalan asylum claim
Fed court opens door for Guatemalan asylum claim
Associated Press - July 12, 2010 3:25 PM ET
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - All Guatemalan women could be poised to qualify for political asylum in the United States under a federal appeals court ruling issued Monday.
The asylum could be granted based on the high murder rate of women in the Central American country.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a strongly worded ruling reversing the deportation orders of 2 immigration courts that such a claim applies too broadly. The San Francisco-based court ordered the immigration judges to reconsider granting asylum to Lesly Yajayra Perdomo, an illegal immigrant who settled in Reno, Nev.
Perdomo applied for asylum in 2004 citing Guatemala's poor record of investigating and solving the hundreds of murders of women annually.
The appeals court ruled that fear of "femicide" appears to be a legitimate asylum claim.

How long until Guatemalan men are granted asylum because there are too few women left in Guatemala?

This insanity must be stopped! Next they will want protected minority status and equal rights protection once in the US. We had an "honorary" Guatemalan consular official active in renaming a local street. Didn't know this was part of diplomatic protocol. It's no surprise this would come out of the 9th Circuit in SF.
