OLYMPIA, Wash. – May Day protests for workers' rights ended up on Gov. Chris Gregoire's doorstep Thursday afternoon as dozens of people marched into the capitol building to Gregoire's office.

Protesters also clashed in Downtown Olympia with police who were armed with pepper spray paintball guns.

About 40 protesters, some wearing masks over their faces, also spray painted anarchist symbols on the marble walls and wood doors inside the building.

"Sanctuary now," the protesters chanted over and over as one man pounded on Gregoire's door.
Officials say Gregoire was not in the capitol at the time.

When a state trooper arrived, telling protesters that some of them would be allowed to meet with a representative, one man yelled "We will not be divided."

More troopers came in to block the door and make sure things didn't get out of hand.

In the city, police controlled the crowd using pepper spray paintball guns. Some protesters also blocked police cars and a few were arrested. A couple of windows at a bank were also smashed in.

Protesters also rallied at Sylvester Park, carrying signs and playing music.

The protests coincide with immigration marches in Downtown Seattle. Workers at Puget Sound ports held a work stoppage Thursday, protesting the Iraq War, although there is speculation it's actually a ploy in contract negotiations.

The actual participants in this event in Olympia, are almost certainly the usual bunch of local goofball troublemakers. Most of them are Evergreen State students (a liberal, I mean LIBERAL arts college just outside of town).

I really don't see many bonafide IAs in the videos hosted online from the same site. Just local 20-something, communist wannabe's.

Note - there is a video posted of coverage of the protests last night (night of the 1st). I think it is still there.

Michelle Malkin has used these / this group of unhinged moonbats in many of her stories about anti-war demonstrations and related things.

For the most part, these are local kids from Evergreen State College - often, from middle-to-upper class homes - who are people that are just looking for a justification to protest <something>, well.. <anything>. They're chronically unhappy - about <everything> or is it <anything>?

They would be better off protesting in Mexico and other countries, for better treatment of their citizens.

The incident in Olympia had little if anything to do with the immigration issue. (Yeah, Phred, I know Evergreen, I am an alumni!!) From what I have been hearing, the people involved were primarily anti-war protesters. The aggressivness of their confrontation yesterday is a carryover from a another "riot" that occured earlier this year at Evergreen after a concert on campus, in which police cars were overturned, etc. They are out to confront the police. Some of them are local college students, with some reinforcement from the regions (Oregon and Washington) hardcore anarchists. They have been active anti war protests over the past year or so at the Ports of Tacoma, Olympia, and Grays Harbor (Aberdeen) when Stryker Brigade equipment has been deployed from Fort Lewis to Iraq and Afganistan. They are definately of the moonbat crowd, and their interest in the immigration issue is, at best, convenient as a cover and insincere.

Good grief...Knew Western Washington State was full of liberals but sure didn't know we had those kind of idiots. I truly am embarrased by these kind of things in my home state. *Sigh* This country is sure going down that huge sinkhole .. maybe China is really at the other end.

Olympia, Washington, U.S. – A bloc of black-clad anarchists left an authorized immigration rights May Day march and attacked banks and the state capitol building. The windows of two banks were smashed, despite the fact that customers and employees were inside. The group also allegedly attacked police officers who tried to stop them. Police used pepper ball guns against marchers.

Government business was temporarily disrupted and windows were broken as dozens of protesters burst into the legislature chanting anti-state and pro-immigrant slogans. Protesters left without arrest, but left their demands such as "Burn the Capitol" on the building's walls. Six people were arrested throughout the day, including an individual who was also arrested at a riot at Evergreen State College in February.
