US May Day immigration protests target Trump, fall elections

NEW YORK (AP) — Immigrants say President Donald Trump's administration has become almost everything they feared, but while they rally across the United States on May Day, their focus is less on huge turnout Tuesday than on the first Tuesday in November.

Marches and other demonstrations for labor and immigrant rights were planned from Florida to New York to California on International Workers' Day and come amid similar actions worldwide.

"The Trump administration has made very clear that they've declared war on the immigrant community on all levels," said Javier Valdez, co-executive director of the advocacy group Make the Road New York.

Immigrant rights groups have joined in May Day activities for more than a decade, initially to push back against harsh legislative proposals and later to clamor for reform and legal status for immigrants in the country illegally who were brought to the U.S. as children or overstayed their visas.

Now, they want to drive turnout in the midterm elections. Advocates hope voters target lawmakers who have pushed for measures that hurt immigrants and replace them with immigrant-friendly policymakers, said Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in Los Angeles.

"Elections have consequences, and the consequences for our community have been dire, and if we do not change the balance of power, we question our ability to remain free in this country," she said.

Protesters still are taking aim at policy changes under Trump, including a country-specific travel ban, the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, high-profile detention and deportation efforts, and proposals to cut back the overall numbers of people allowed to immigrate permanently.

Trump and his supporters say the enforcement and policy changes are needed for national security and economic benefits. Some of the new policies have gotten tangled up in court, and Trump hasn't secured funding for his coveted border wall with Mexico.

After the rallies, immigrant rights groups will join LGBTQ, African-American and women's organizations this summer to push for the election of new leaders, Salas said, adding that they hope to see more support from Americans who aren't immigrants.

"It is really a fundamental question about what kind of a country we're going to be," she said. "For us, the question of immigration is a question about race, and it is also a question about real equality in this country."

It's the easiest possible thing you can do to save our country from this drug-cartel funded scourge of illegal immigration.

I do not think voting Republican will do anything to get rid of the illegals. Both parties are all talk and no action. We voted for Trump and what good did it do? I am fed up with all this party swapping. No matter how we vote nothing really changes with the illegal aliens. Call me a pessimist because when it comes to illegal immigration, I have lost all hope of anything changing.

It did so much good, gabelle39. So much good. Please try not to be discouraged, a lot has happened, a lot is happening, and a lot more will happen. This problem has been cultivated by millions of evil people over 40 years. It will take some amazing actions and a little time for one man named Trump and a few other Real Republicans to curb it, stall it, back it up, turn it around and then squash it and kill it once and for all.

The opposition waged a DDD campaign starting in March of last year, "Disorient, Demoralize, Defeat". Please don't let them win.

Yes, but this has not been with the cooperation of Republicans in Congress, for the most part. They are part of the swamp that is against all that President Trump is trying to do. He has failed on a few occasions, but has succeeded more than he has failed. But voting Republican will do nothing if we just vote in more bozos. We have the Graham's, the Ryan's, McConnell, and a host of other Republican stars who ended up being disappointments. So I agree withgabelle39 in that I have lost all hope of anything changing.

Actually, Republicans are not against all that President Trump is trying to do. The vast majority in Congress support him and his agenda and his policies. Yes, there are a few NeverTrumper Republicans in Congress, but gleefully, several of them are resigning and not running for re-election so new people will be primaried to run in the General Election. Not all Republicans are going to agree on everything, even if they agree on the big picture, they disagree on the details, but if you have enough Republicans, then there will be enough to pass the legislation and funding we want or need. They'll whip the votes, they'll horse-trade and negotiate. That's our system. But you have to have enough to start with to ever get it done which means we need more Republicans, because we just don't have enough to pass anything except through reconciliation, which is very limited on what you can do that way, and doesn't include most immigration type bills and because we don't have any excess even for reconciliation in the Senate, there's always going to be 1 or 2 that won't vote to curb illegal immigration or legal immigration.

That's why I say VOTE REPUBLICAN 2018!

After all, what have you go to lose? Nothing. Everything is a gain. That's how you win, whether it's rushing yards in football, layups in basketball, base hits in baseball or Congressional seats in politics.
