Federal Agents Round Up Illegal Immigrants at Country Club

The Country Club of Jackson caters to prominent members of the Jackson community. The federal raid sent shock waves through its membership.

Immigration and customs enforcement agents hit the posh country club on St. Andrews Drive before noon Wednesday. The ICE agents were armed with specialized warrants allowing them to go on commercial property to inspect for undocumented workers.

18 illegal immigrants from several countries were detained. They are being processed by Homeland Security in Pearl. Authorities tell us all were employed by the country club.

There is no indication how long the illegal immigrants had been on the payroll. They worked in jobs such as grounds keeping and other staff positions. The U.S. Attorney's office says their investigation is contining and would not reveal how they were tipped off.

We are also told federal civil and criminal penalities can be leveled against employers who knowingly hire people who are not elibigle to work in this country.

I'll bet the membership is a little worried. I wonder if they can be held responsible since most country clubs are owned by the members.

If only they could be.
