Texas Emergency Rooms See Spike in Unpaid Bills

EL PASO, Texas – The number of patients visiting emergency rooms in Texas hospitals and who then do not pay for the services they receive, especially in the border zone, is one of the major problems facing the state health care system.

Margaret Althoff-Olivas, director of Public Affairs at University Medical Center of El Paso Thomason Hospital, says it is impossible to determine how many of these patients are undocumented immigrants, since by law they cannot be asked to reveal their legal status at the time they enter the hospital.

“We know that many of these people who owe money to the hospital are U.S. citizens, but for economic reasons they cannot get up to date with their obligations,â€

    illegals leave our country now

And that is because illegal aliens use those services. All illegal aliens must be deported now. WE need that money. We American citizens. Deport all illegals.

It would be much cheaper to buy Spanish classes instead of health insurance.

I was in a waiting room for a CT scan when a well-dressed woman walked in, spoke in Spanish and was immediately sent to another window where the woman spoke in Spanish to her. She was not even asked for any ID information, and showed none. She took a seat with the rest of us.

How did she get there? Did she just materialize in the hallway or did she drive her car? No license? There were no housing units within walking distance of this outpatient diagnostic imaging unit.

She will receive no bill from her treatment, yet I will be dunned for any payment over what my insurance company provides that this facility deems I need to pay. This well-dressed woman with a telephone I wish I could afford to own has much more discretionary income than I do yet I must pay her share as well.

I am going to start my Spanish lessons as soon as possible - it pays.

I wonder what would happen if an American went to the ER without any ID. "I'm John Doe" etc..
