More states to deny illegal migrants driver's licenses
More states to deny illegal migrants driver's licenses
January 30, 2008
By Emily Bazar, USA TODAY
States that have been issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants are making U-turns.
Beginning Monday, illegal immigrants in Oregon no longer will be able to get driver's licenses. Last week, Michigan stopped issuing new licenses to all but citizens and legal permanent residents. Maryland announced this month that starting in 2010, it will require applicants to prove they're in the USA legally.
In four of the five remaining states that allow illegal immigrants to drive — Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, Utah and Washington — there have been attempts to reverse course, according to the National Immigration Law Center (NILC). The exception: Hawaii.
"Oregon is one of the few states in the country that didn't have these ID requirements for driver's licenses," says Patty Wentz, spokeswoman for Gov. Ted Kulongoski. "That made us one of the weak links."
Kulongoski, a Democrat, directed the state's motor vehicle agency to require a valid Social Security number and other proof of identity. A legal resident who doesn't have a Social Security number can present other ID, such as a current visa.
Some officials who are changing policies cite a federal law that sets standards for licenses to deter fraud and terrorism, but political pressure also motivated the changes.
Last year, New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, ignited a firestorm when he proposed letting illegal immigrants have licenses. He dropped the plan after protests from county officials, state and federal lawmakers and opponents of illegal immigration such as NumbersUSA.
"The whole New York debacle really scared a lot of policymakers," says the NILC's Tyler Moran. "People are folding before they're even forced to."
In Michigan, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land now issues new licenses only to citizens and legal permanent residents. The state Legislature is considering her proposal to issue licenses to legal but temporary residents.
Martha Gonzalez-Cortes of Michigan's Office of Migrant Affairs says she's concerned that illegal immigrants will drive without licenses and insurance. "As the number of accidents involving uninsured drivers goes up, that will get passed along to the average consumer," she says.
In Maryland, Gov. Martin O'Malley, a Democrat, this month directed the transportation department to create a single driver's license that complies with the new federal law and rules out illegal immigrants. He dropped a plan for a two-tier system that would have allowed an illegal immigrant a license OK for driving but not for boarding planes or entering federal facilities.
"The governor felt we could not allow our state to become the only state on the East Coast to allow undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses," spokesman Rick Abbruzzese says. "The governor did not want Maryland to become a magnet state for people trying to get driver's licenses."
Utah state Rep. Glenn Donnelson, a Republican, has tried for four years to stop illegal immigrants from getting driver "privilege cards," which allow them to drive legally.
Donnelson says his bill may have a better shot this year because of momentum in other states. "I think the citizens are a little upset because the federal government's not doing anything about this problem," he says.

This is great news and it is good to see it all combined in one article.
We need to get this on the homepage and setup an activist plan to push harder in the remaining 5 states of Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, Utah and Washington

Agreed.
And... another really interesting aspect of the sheer geography involved with that list is the following are 'true' border states in the purest sense:
Maine, New Mexico, Washington, - Utah is the only one not at all, and Hawaii is in many ways, it's own special case.
People in Washington should be more receptive to the idea than most of the others owing to things like the apprehension of Ahmed Rassam (LAX 2000 plotter) and with OR immediately south also axing DLs to IAs too in the next week.
I have heard numerous reports of big backlogs at many local DMV offices in the last couple weeks. Most are waiting to take the written and/or driving portion of license tests.Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

More States Refusing Illegal Migrants IDs
January 30, 2008 7:44 a.m. EST
Vittorio Hernandez - AHN News Writer
Washington, DC (AHN) - The road for illegal immigrants in the U.S. is getting shorter, literally. More states are refusing to issue drivers' licenses to undocumented aliens, while 4 of 5 states that still allows illegal migrants to drive are thinking of changing course.
Oregon will no longer issue driver's license to illegal migrants starting Monday, following Michigan which halted the issuance last week. Maryland will get tough with undocumented foreigners by 2010.
The issue goes beyond an international fight against terrorism and fraud, but has political undertones. When New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer proposed last year to allow illegal immigrants to secure driver's licenses, the proposal was met by a wide protest.
Aside from depriving illegal migrants of documentation, one possible consequence of this snowballing move is a rise in number of accidents involving unlicensed and uninsured drivers, pointed out Martha Gonzales-Cortez of Michigan's Office of Migrant Affairs.
The anti-illegal immigrant debate has grown beyond documentation. In San Diego, California, the adoption by an anti-illegal immigrant group of a portion of a road near the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint caused controversy. Caltrans had granted previously the San Diego Minuteman, the anti-illegal immigration group, the stretch from Interstate 5 under the Adopt-A-Highway program.
Members of the Latino Legislative causes protested that the Minutemen's sign alone could draw protesters, which may cause traffic or accident. Caltran workers promptly removed the San Diego Minutemen sign and moved it to the less busy highway along California 52 in eastern San Diego county.

More States to deny
Giving an illegal alien a driver's license does not force them to buy car insurance. These people are experts at evading the law.
Here in Texas we have a "named excluded driver" clause. One person is named on the policy and pays a cheap premium. The other 15 people who also drive the car are listed as "excluded driver's."(Usually because they have poor driving records) If anyone other than the one policy owner is involved in an accident, the insurance company will not pay, regardless of being at fault for the accident and having NO LICENSE. The best part is that the excluded driver's names are not listed on the proof of insurance cards, so if pulled over the driver can produce an insurance card showing the car is insured.
The idea that giving them driver's licenses will make our roads safer is a joke. Lets see the insurance claim numbers of the number of accidents where the driver has a license but no insurance in the states that still issue licenses to illegal aliens.
