NY: Warehouse Workers Quit in Immigration Inquiry
December 13, 2007
Warehouse Workers Quit in Immigration Inquiry
By NINA BERNSTEIN
Fresh Direct, the online grocery delivery operation that caters to affluent and overworked New Yorkers, lost dozens of employees this week after federal immigration officials notified the company that its employee records were under investigation.
The company sent its workers a memo on Sunday and Monday saying that Immigration and Customs Enforcement planned to inspect the records of every employee and asked them to update their information and provide documents, like Social Security cards, to prove employment eligibility. At least 40 warehouse workers who could not produce proof that they were authorized to work in the United States quit or were suspended.
At the company’s warehouse in Long Island City, Queens, the work force, largely immigrants, reacted with panic and distress as news of the inquiry spread.

Sounds like self-deportation to me. So what if we can't round them all up? This shows: dry up the jobs pool that is drawing them, and they will leave. It just needs to be across the board.

[quote]One 41-year-old woman from Ecuador, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of deportation, said she was let go with an expression of regret when she told human resources workers at the company that the Social Security number she had been using for nearly four years was false.

They need to start prosecuting people who use stolen SS#s. If word got around they could spend 10yrs in prison and pay a big fine, there would probably be a lot more people leaving.

Personally, I think ICE should have raided the company and apprehended all illegals with the intent of deporation. Unfortunately, many of these folks will just move around until they can find another job elsewhere. I honestly don't believe we've come to the point yet where most of these folks will self deport. At this point and time I think the raids should continue and illegals should be forceably deported. We need to firmly instill fear in the community. We also need to jail more employers who are knowingly hiring illegals.
I know attrition through enforcement will work, however, I don't think we've reached the point where we can depend on it - not yet anyway. That point will be reached when we have a national program online that will ensure businesses are required by law to check the status of new employee hires. The SAVE Act will fit that bill. Once employer verifications is required, we can then send employers to jail or fine the heck out of them for not peforming the required checks. Furthermore, we need those "no-match" letters sent out that are being held up by the courts. Non-compliance will give us another valid reason to go after employers. To enhance attrition through enforcement, we need to aggressively go after, and prosecute, employers.
What was that childhood game called where you whack a character as it pops up on the board and then another one immediately pops up elsewhere? Wasn't it called "Whackamo" or something similar? That's the game I think we're now playing with the illegals. We need to cover all the holes so the illegals can't pop up elswhere."The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" ** Edmund Burke**
