Rick Perry is walking back his statement from last week's GOP presidential debate that some conservatives are "heartless" if they oppose a Texas law that gives in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants who promise to pursue citizenship.

In an interview with Newsmax, Perry said he chose a "poor word" to explain his position.

"For people who don't want their state to be giving to illegal aliens, illegal immigrants in this country, that's their call," he said. "And I respect that. And I was probably a bit over-passionate by using that word and it was inappropriate."

The initial comment, which happened during the heart of the GOP debate, drew the ire of many conservatives in the audience -- and across the country.

Here's that Perry quote in its entirety:"If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for other reason than they've been brought there by no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart."

Perry has maintained his support of the Texas law, and he didn't back away from that during the Newsmax interview.

"Here's what I do believe: it is a state's sovereign right to decide that issue for themselves," Perry said. "In Texas in 2001 we had 181 members of the legislature - only four voted against this piece of legislation - because it wasn't about immigration it was about education.
