Lawyers: Feds targeting undocumented on Greyhound, Amtrak

Federal agents appear to have stepped up checks for undocumented immigrants on Amtrak trains, Greyhound buses and other forms of public transportation, The Miami Herald reports.

Federal border patrol officials would not provide figures on apprehensions on public transportation, citing law enforcement sensitivity, but lawyers say they've seen an upswing.

"I am definitely seeing a large number of people stopped by Greyhound," lawyer Sara Van Hofwegen, who works with federal immigration detainees in the Miami area, tells the Herald.

"I'd say Greyhound makes up 20% of our clients now," says Juliet Williams, a law assistant in central Florida. "That is much more than we've usually seen."

One undocumented immigrant, Azucena, who did not want her last name published in the Herald, was apprehended on a Greyhound as she headed from the Atlanta area down to Florida. She says that when she was taken to a detention center in Broward County, Fla., most of the 120 women she met at the center when she arrived had been apprehended in the same way.

"On a Greyhound," she tells the Herald. "The most common was Greyhound."

Azucena has since been released with the help of Van Hofwegen.

Federal agents appear to have stepped up checks for undocumented immigrants on public transportation, including Greyhound buses and Amtrak. The feds say they have the authority to check any public area.

As a Greyhound bus prepared to leave a small town near Atlanta, 19-year-old Azucena headed to the window seat on the last row , on her way to Miami to start school and a new life.

She propped a pillow against the glass and drifted off to sleep as the bus glided down the highway toward South Florida.

Around 5 a.m., Azucena, who does not want her last name used, woke up when the bus driver pulled up to the Pompano Beach bus station—one stop before her final destination.

Three U.S. Border Patrol agents boarded, announcing they would be checking IDs. She lifted her head to see one agent walking directly toward her.

“It kind of looked like they already knew who they were looking for, because they went straight to the back where I was,â€

As for Azucena, she’s slowly getting her confidence back after five months in school. Following her February release from detention, she was granted a social security number and a two year-work permit.

And what the illegal alien attorneys didn't say, business is up 20% and we have more customers thanks to the enforcement of immigration laws.

Illegals don't go to their office voluntarily, they only end up there after the Feds go after them. The immigration attorneys should be thanking the US taxpayers for subsidizing their income and for the job security.
