Fight for Immigrant Rights May 1

    By Staff

Around the country, organizers and leaders of the immigrant rights movement are discussing and making plans for another round of May 1 protests. Last year millions of immigrants and their supporters took to the streets on International Workers Day. This powerful upsurge, which extended for many months, defeated legislation that would have further criminalized undocumented workers in the United States.

On Feb. 3 an important national conference took place in Los Angeles to lay plans for this spring’s protests. A call from the conference organizers stated, “On May Day 2006 history was made. The world watched as millions marched and boycotted the economy.” The statement also noted, “Students walked out, businesses closed and the people refused to buy. In Mexico, Central America and many other countries U.S. corporations were targeted by millions of workers. It was truly a Day without Immigrants.” The call concluded by urging an effort to, “Make May Day another truly historical day.”

Among the organizations backing the Los Angeles conference were the March 25th Coalition LA , May 1st Coalition- New York, Centro Sin Fronteras, BAYAN National, Southwest Workers Union-San Antonio and many others.

Carlos Montes of Los Angeles, a long-time leader in the Chicano community states, “The masses of people are the makers of history. On May Day we will take to streets to press for full equality and to end discrimination.”

This spring will be an important period for the immigrant rights movement. In his state of the union address, Bush made it clear that immigration was on the agenda and stated his opposition to amnesty for the undocumented. There are many in congress that would like to see a ‘guest worker program that would serve big business by allowing for the exploitation of immigrant labor while denying immigrant workers their rights. It is vital to press the demand for legalization and full equality on May 1.

It was a great day for retailers in my area. Sales were on par and shop lifting was reported to be down by 10%.

Yes I agree America needs another wake up call as to how many illegal aliens are in this country and what they think of americans and our country. By all means take to the streets, hopefully more employers will fire more of them this time. It should enrage americans again how blatant these illegal aliens are about demanding rights they are not entitled to. Maybe we will even see some more burned or upside down flags as well. Visuals work and there are more anti-illegal immigrants groups now so there should be more coverage that will be damaging to their cause.

    Immigrant rights????

what they are talking about is illegal amnesty and benefits for them. Legal immigrants have rights and are protected, it is the illegal immigrants who have no rights in America that they are trying to force on Americans. Is there some reason that Americans cannot see the difference?

ICE needs to go to the marchs and pick up everyone and start deporting those that don't belong in the USA. Put them in jails and give them 24 hours to produce legal papers otherwise deport them without any appeal, etc. Just start deporting them.

I've been apprehensive about what they will try to do in May again this year. This time I wish there was more formal resistance planned by political, education, and business leaders against this form of rebellion. To voice constituent pressure, I think we should call our school systems and mayors right away to insist they prepare for and pre-condemn any more garbage like this.

YOU BET YOU SHOULD LOSE YOUR JOBS.
YOU BET YOUR CHILDREN SHOULD BE EXPELLED.
AND YOU BET AMERICANS WILL CHASTISE YOU.

WE ARE SICK OF YOUR DEMANDS!

So true. Better yet, why can't ICE be present and just start asking for proof of citizenship. No proof, deported. Or, make sure they know before the march that they will be expected to show proof of citizenship. How many would show then? Oh that would be against their civil liberties though, wouldn't it?
    Deportacion? Si Se Puede!

Another mass demonstration by illegals will do far, far more for us, by further waking up the American public, than it will for them.
