Once called a 'disgrace,' Trump taps ex-Obama border patrol chief for ICE

President Donald Trump continued his leadership shakeup on immigration at the Department of Homeland Security on Sunday, tweeting that he was naming former Obama Administration official Mark Morgan to be the new head of federal immigration enforcement.

"Mark is a true believer and American Patriot," the President tweeted on Sunday morning in announcing the ICE pick. "He will do a great job!"

A former FBI agent, Morgan has been a frequent presence on the Fox News and Fox Business networks in recent months, lending his support to President Trump's push to crack down on illegal immigration.

"The President is absolutely correct when he says this is a national security and a humanitarian crisis," Morgan said in January about the need to protect the southern border of the United States.

Morgan though was seen much differently by supporters of President Trump back in 2016, when Morgan was tapped to head the Border Patrol at the end of the Obama Administration, as the main union of border patrol agents bluntly and publicly denounced Morgan's leadership.

"Chief Morgan is a disgrace to the Border Patrol," the National Border Patrol Council wrote on November 30, 2016, declaring that Morgan "does not have the will to secure the border."

The union, which represents over 16,000 border patrol agents, blasted Morgan for testimony in late 2016 to a Senate committee, in which he embraced the idea of 'comprehensive immigration reform.'

"This is directly contrary to the voice and will of the vast majority of the Republicans elected to Congress," the union wrote about Morgan. "It is also directly contrary to President-elect Trump’s comments while on the campaign trail."

“Morgan — a hand picked Obama Administration official — does not have the will necessary to secure the border for the citizens and legal residents of this country,” the union wrote.

Morgan left his Border Patrol post in early 2017 - with news reports at the time indicating that he had been asked to leave.

But now, Morgan seems to be in line with the White House, and the President, on immigration policies.

"This is a crisis like we've never experienced before," Morgan said a few weeks ago.A month ago, President Trump suddenly withdrew the nomination of Ron Vitiello to head ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforcement; three days later, the head of the Department of Homeland Security was on her way out as well.

UPI5 May 20190 May 5 (UPI) — President Donald Trump on Sunday named Mark Morgan as the new head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Trump hailed Morgan, a former FBI agent and chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, as a “true believer and American Patriot” as he introduced him as the newest leader of the agency.


“I am pleased to inform all of those who believe in a strong, fair and sound immigration policy that Mark Morgan will be joining the Trump Administration as the head of our hard working men and women of ICE,” Trump wrote on Twitter.


Morgan had previously served as chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, including the last few months of the Obama administration, before being asked to resign days after Trump took office in January 2017 while facing criticism regarding his qualifications.


Morgan has publicly endorsed Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the border, including support for the wall.


“The president had no choice, Congress has failed, they continue to fail,” Morgan said in a February interview with CNN.


The Trump administration has been seeking to fill the position of ICE director since the former acting directer, Thomas Homan, retired in June of last year.


Trump withdrew his nomination of then-Acting ICE Director Ronald Vitiello to permanently lead the agency last month, saying he wanted to go in a “tougher direction.”


Kirstjen Nielsen left as the Homeland Security security last month reportedly because she did not do enough to secure the nation’s southern border with Mexico. She was replaced by Kevin McAleenan, who served as the Customs and Border Protection commissioner.

Approximately 6 months ago, CBP Commissioner Gil R. Kerlikowske officially announced the hiring (appointment) of Mark Morgan, one of the Obama Administration’s top risers within the FBI. Morgan is the same FBI Agent that a number of congressional offices believe “scrubbed” FBI training manuals of information that would have been damning to the agency and the Administration. Chief Morgan is a disgrace to the Border Patrol.

According to Commissioner Kerlikowske, the Border Patrol needed a culture change, so instead of hiring the most qualified applicant — the one that congress had confidence in and who had already started the culture change — the commissioner went outside the organization and “appointed” Mark Morgan. Morgan, who loves to flaunt his FBI credentials, was arrogant enough to push a great leader, manager, and citizen aside to feed his own ego and personal interest. In reality, and if his first 6 months are any indication, he is in over his head and doing nothing but running scared.


On September 13, 2016, House Committee on Homeland Security; Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security held a hearing entitled “Moving the Line of Scrimmage: Re-examining the Defense-in-Depth Strategy.” Chief Morgan and NBPC President Brandon Judd were asked to testify. Agent Judd was supposed to sit on the same panel as Chief Morgan, but CBP refused to make Morgan available unless he testified on his own panel. CBP and Morgan were worried Agent Judd would come off as more credible, knowledgeable, and polished. Morgan testified by himself and proved both his and CBP’s worries correct. He came off like a robot, stuck to the administration’s line, and refused to give meaningful answers.


Today, November 30, 2016, Morgan testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. During the question and answer session, Senator Carper, the ranking Democrat who has advocated for the legalization of all persons who are in this country illegally, stated that he believes the fix to the border security problem is comprehensive immigration reform. Chief Morgan, the head of the Office of Border Patrol who by law is supposed to stay politically neutral, and who is not supposed to advocate for partisan legislation, agreed with Senator Carper by stating that the Border Patrol supports comprehensive immigration reform. This is directly contrary to the voice and will of the vast majority of the Republicans elected to Congress. It is also directly contrary to President-elect Trump’s comments while on the campaign trail.


NBPC President Brandon Judd and his team worked diligently to set up a press conference after the hearing to discuss the merits of Morgan’s testimony. Agent Judd, however, was notified a few days ago that his appearance would be required to speak with an OPR Investigator as a witness regarding a matter of menial importance. This interview, which the agency refused to re-schedule ensured Agent Judd wouldn’t be able to be present at the hearing or the press conference. Morgan is worried because he knows that his comments attacking President-elect Trump’s border security policies prior to the election has him in hot water and his position as the Chief of the Border Patrol is tenuous at best. Because of such he did everything in his power to ensure Agent Judd was unable to be in DC when need be to dispute his testimony.

Trump has made numerous bad hires over the last two years. Either he's not doing his own homework or he's relying on those chosen to be in his "circle of trust" too much! Trump has surrounded himself with "comprehensive immigration reform" supporters, so this choice should not be surprising. My eyes were open to his true priorities when he fired former AG Jeff Sessions.

To some extent, I believe you're right. I believe it was Judge Jeanne Pirro (sp?) and Hannity that gave Trump the courage to fire Jeff Sessions (they routinely provided him cover to do so). Those two were the main talking heads on Fox News that were constantly bashing and bringing on anti-Sessions guests. I didn't hear Watters, Carlson or Ingraham constantly bashing Jeff Sessions. They were more on the immigration issue, while Pirro and Hannity were primarily about the Russian collusion probe.
