Firefighters Held Up At BorderTrying To Reach Fire

ROUSES POINT, N.Y. - Firefighters from Quebec said they were held up at the Rouses Point border crossing while trying to provide mutual aid to firefighters battling flames at the Anchorage Inn Sunday. Lacolle and St. Paul fire officials said several members of their squad didn't have proper photo identification and were held up for close to 15 minutes while trying to reach the fire. Fire officials also said border agents inspected some of the fire trucks.

Clinton County fire officials said they called Customs and Border Protection to let them know firefighters would be crossing from Canada, but the crews were still held up.

Fire officials said its common practice to call in crews from out of the country, especially in Rouses Point where some Canadian crews are closer than some American fire departments.

Border officials said while they recognize the need for emergency crews to get to the scene of emergencies, they have a primary mission of protecting the border and need to make sure everyone crossing the border is fine to do so. A spokesman for Border and Customs Protection also said the firefighters were processed in under nine minutes, not 15.

Chris Trombley from Clinton County Emergency Services said he understands the need to protect the border, but said common sense needs to be exercised in emergency situations and expedited processing for emergency officials needs to take place.

Fire trucks delayed at U.S.-Canada border

    Published: Nov. 14, 2007 at 2:36 PM
Print story Email to a friend Font size:ROUSES POINT, N.Y., Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A Canadian fire crew rendering assistance at a blaze in upstate New York was held up at the U.S. border for eight minutes, a report said.

Two other trucks were delayed for two minutes, CNN reported Wednesday. A source told the network that a firefighter on the truck delayed the longest had a criminal record.

"We've had a mutual aid system in place since the '50s and I can't remember anything like this happening," said Chris Trombley, deputy fire coordinator for Clinton County in New York.

Trombley said that in the past border agents cleared fire trucks on emergency calls in less than 30 seconds, although they sometimes asked firefighters to provide identification when they returned to Canada. He said that he and Michael LeBlanc, chief of the Rouses Point fire department, plan to meet with federal officials to discuss the situation.

The fire gutted the Anchorage Inn, a landmark restaurant in Rouses Point. The Canadian firefighters would not have been able to save the building but would have provided exhausted New York firefighters quicker relief by arriving sooner.
