Miami's Krome detention center readies for Haitian influx
BY KATHLEEN McGRORY

Federal officials plan to relocate hundreds of detainees from the Krome detention center in west Miami-Dade to make room for a potential influx of undocumented migrants from Haiti, sources at the Department of Homeland Security said on Saturday.

It was not immediately clear when the relocation process would begin, or where the detainees currently housed at Krome would be placed. There are several other federal holding facilities in Florida that could be used.

The news came days after a massive earthquake devastated Port-au-Prince and the surrounding region. Tens of thousands are presumed dead, and much of the capital city's infrastructure was destroyed.

The Krome Service Processing Center, as it is officially called, currently holds about 600 people.
